New Cabela's Sidekick
« on: July 28, 2008, 01:53:47 AM »
I ordered one this morning from Cabela's.  It's supposed to be stainless with a Realtree Hardwoods stock for $239.00.  They have free shipping right now.  I'm glad I found one.  I was upset when NEF stopped making them.

They have all their Sidekicks/Heritages on sale, makes me think they're discontinuing them too.  :'( Even tho they aren't legal here, makes me want one anyway!!

The one I bought is the Heritage.  The only difference is the camo stock as far as I can tell.  I hope Cabelas will continue to carry them.  They are the best inexpensive muzzleloader you can buy IMO.

Yep, same thing except for the camo stock & forend. Oh, and "A portion of the proceeds from each rifle will be donated to the Congressional SportsmEn's Foundation. The CSF strives to protect sportsmen's rights on Capitol Hill. Affectionately known as "The SportsmEn's Best Friend in Washington," the CSF works with the 320 members of the Congressional SportsmEn's Caucus to help Congress make truly informed decisions on matters concerning the outdoor sports."

Congrats, Swampman!

Both of Tim's links went to the Sidekick for me, here is a link to the Heritage

Tim,

Can they be made legal with a #11 conversion?

Busta,

Not without other modifications, the traditional cap is only part of the requirement, the ignition must also be exposed to the elements, not enclosed.

Thanks for adding the link to the Heritage.  ;)

I guess you would have to butcher it to make it work then? Probably not worth the hassle, with all the other options out there.

Your welcome on the link. I went back and shortened it up.

Larry modified and older Huntsman by machining a part of the barrel away above the nipple to make it legal, but I just didn't want to do that on one, I may have if I didn't already have other MLs to shoot tho. I've hunted with a flintlock in the modern firearm season several years cuz our ML seasons offer really poor opportunity, just can't see using a persuction gun when the flinter is so much more fun.  ;)

It came today.  It's really nice looking.  I plan on installing the new Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5X32 that I had in the stuck back in the closet on it.  Since I have to use high mounts anyway, I'm tempted to use See-Tru mounts.

That's a nice scope, but it sure isn't H&R friendly with the big power ring and ocular bell, it takes a lot of modification to the hammer to mount it lower, or high rings.

I have 2 sets of Weaver high rings.  I'll probably just use one of them.  I've used this scope on my Marlins with great sucess.

Will those holders work on the Huntsman? What size is the breechplug {will it fit in a Huntsman]? Does it's wrench fit a Huntsman?    KODY

Looks like I'm going to have to find a set of rings that are just a little taller than the Weaver high rings in order to mount my Bushnell Banner scope.  I saw a few sets of see thru rings today that might work.

They may be planning to discontinue these good muzzleloaders. I got a Bargain Cave flyer from Cabelas this afternoon and they have the Heritage Stainless/Realtree for $219 and the Sidekick Stainless/Black for $199.

They have the blued Sidekicks in stock again for $159.00 and flat rate shipping for less than $3.00.  That's so cheap, buying a muzzleloader barrel from NEF doesn't make sense.

I ended up using Weaver Extra High rings.  Here's a pic.
