McClellan: Fox News Commentators Use The ‘Talking Points’ That The White House Sends Them

Think Progress
Sunday, July 28, 2008

On MSNBC’s Hardball last night, host Chris Matthews asked former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan if he saw “FOX television as a tool” to get the White House’s “message out” while he was in the Bush administration. “Certainly there were commentators and other, pundits at FOX News, that were useful to the White House,” replied McClellan, adding that they were given “talking points.”

Making a distinction between journalists like Brit Hume and commentators like Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly, McClellan admitted that “certainly” the White House used Fox News talking heads as “spokespeople” with “a script”:

MATTHEWS: So, you wouldn’t use Brit Hume to sell stuff for them, but you’d use some of the nighttime guys?

MCCLELLAN: Yeah, I would separate that out, and certainly I, you know, they’ll say, that’s because they agree with those views in the White House.

MATTHEWS: Well, they didn’t need a script though, did they?

MCCLELLAN: No, well, probably not.

(Article continues below)

McClellan later told MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann that “it was done frequently, especially on high-profile issues” and that Fox often gave the White House “its desired results.” Current Press Secretary Dana Perino would only tell Olbermann, “I’m not aware of that.” Watch it:

Fox News’s close relationship to the Bush administration should come as no surprise to anyone, considering Fox’s Neil Cavuto once ran a segment asking if George W. Bush was “the best President.” But, as Olbermann notes, it “is one of those things you assumed to be true all along, yet you are shocked when the hard confirmation actually shows up on your door.”

Not only is Fox the network the White House turned to when Vice President Dick Cheney had to explain how he shot his friend in the face, but the network has also produced sympathetic documentaries on both Cheney and President Bush.

Nothing new here.  Both parties have their "go to" media members.

The Libs obviously have the majority of the media putting our their message.

MS your info comes from Obama's #1 fans and his campaign which is MSNBC.  I would rather watch Fox which is less bias then any other network out there including the local news and newspaper here. Tribready pretty much summed it up.

Thanks, Mr. Wolf.  I guess I worded it wrong. I knew it was a real word, but come on, apart from the onslaught in which it was used by Dems and the media, have you ever really heard it again.  did anyone ever really hear it before that either?  I guess that's what I meant by "made up".  It has no normal usage in the US but sure got said alot by supposedly unbiased, unrelated parties.
You see this alot though, and especially if you channel surf different networks. Same story, same slant, same verbage, same unique wording or phrase....all with an underlying "message"

Yeah, and NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC and you name it are all objective and fair and balanced.  TM7, you didn't have to make it more plain; we knew where you were coming from.  And by the way, haven't you figured out that McClellan is a sellout.  I don't believe much of anything that comes from the tube, radio, papers, or Internet, but I'll believe Bill O'Reilly any day, over a disloyal creep like McClellan.

Magooch...what part of what I wrote do you not understand?  I said that all these outlets are just different flavors from the same ministry,,,some more subtle than others each working in a specialty area of herding mass opinion. For me Fox News became unpalatable and distasteful as I'm not a buyer of the W OF T wholesale or otherwise. Furthermore. Rupert Murdock has shady dealings in pornography, NWO, etc. and I'm not supporting him.

As for McClellan....is there the slightest chance that he has a little bit of conscience left and opted out of the grand illusion process, just too many lies for him to process as the front man?  Perhaps he's the real patriot here afterall.

As for Lou...I like him right now,,,,he's a 3rd and 4th party guy and no lessor evil candidates for him

..TM7

He can't make up his mind on anything. The only good coverage he had was on the Second Amendment.

I agree with your statement magooch.

I don't like any of them, except for Beck and Savage.
One thing I can not stand is a sell out.
Maybe that's why I don't like any of them.
And McClellan is no patriot.
He's kind of a sellout's sellout.

TM7, first off, I didn't see where McClellan blew the whistle on anything that amounted to a crime.  Most of what he had to say was BS and was designed to sell his piece of sh** book.  You seem to have bought right into the libs idea that anything the Bush administration has done, or will do is automatically illegal and not simply a difference of opinion.

Call me gullible, or anything you like, but I believe that President Bush is a patriot and he has had to deal with a Congress that is full of unpatriotic, slimey Dumbycrats that are interested only in politcal power and a very un-American agenda.  Some of them are pure and simple communists--like Maxine Waters--and if anything President Bush has done, blocks what people like her and her ilk are up to--good.

McClellan was on O'Reilly's radio talk show last night.  O'Reilly skinned him alive and nailed him to the wall. McClellan stated his response to Chris Matthews question was a slip, and after 3 minutes of having his head handed to him, he apologized to O'Reilly.
I never cared much for O'Reilly, but I came away with some respect for him.

I believe the subject was that McClellan stated that fox news used talking points given by the white house.
Here is McClellan on O'Reilly's radio talk show last night, which I myself heard in real time:

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST, "HARDBALL": Did you see FOX Television as a tool when you were in the White House? As a useful avenue for getting your message out?

SCOTT MCCLELLAN, FORMER WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY: Well, I make a distinction between the journalist and between the commentators. I mean, certainly there were commentators and other pundits at FOX News that were helpful to the White House. Certainly we got talking points to those people.

MATTHEWS: The people who say call Sean, call Bill, call whoever, did you do that at...

MCCLELLAN: Certainly.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

Certainly? Bull. What McClellan put out there is false. It is a deceit. No one from the White House ever gave me talking points. Ever.

Now, Matthews baited McClellan and he took the bait. I don't even think the man knew what he was saying, but it doesn't matter. As soon as McClellan put the lie on the street, CNN picked it up, and then the far-left blogs ran with it. So this kind of garbage takes on a life of its own. That is unacceptable, and we will hold those involved accountable.

Now, I'm lucky. I have a forum to respond, but most Americans don't have that. They get smeared, they can't fight back. Again, unacceptable.

As for McClellan, well, he was man enough to come on "The Radio Factor" and here's how it went down.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

O'REILLY: Do you owe me an apology?

MCCLELLAN: The truth is, I messed up. I was specifically not trying to single anyone out, including you, but the way a couple of the questions were phrased in that interview, along with my response, left things open to interpretation. And I should not have let that happen. I messed up when it came to leaving things open to interpretation. I understand why you got upset. This was some of your critics went aha, you know, it has to be this. You know, you're the big kahuna at FOX News. And you know, some people tried to paint it in a black and white term to their preconceived notion.

O'REILLY: Look, Matthews says very specifically, do people say call Sean, call Bill. And you say...

MCCLELLAN: Call whoever.

O'REILLY: And you say — yes — and you say certainly. So, I think, first of all you owe me an apology.

MCCLELLAN: Yes, I got cut off. I mean...

O'REILLY: All right. Do you owe me an apology?

MCCLELLAN: Well, I don't think that I should have left it open to interpretation in that regard.

O'REILLY: OK, but wait, wait, wait. Now my name, as you know, my name is now attached by you to White House talking points, and CNN…

MCCLELLAN: No, I did not use your name, Bill. I did not...

O'REILLY: No, he did. He did. And you said certainly. He did and — look, he baited you. Everybody knows he baited you.

MCCLELLAN: Yes, I didn't go on the show to talk about FOX News.

O'REILLY: But that's what they do over there. You know that.

MCCLELLAN: I went on the show to talk about Bush's legacy and the Obama...

O'REILLY: I got it. You went on the show to sell your book. Fine. But you let it go when he was specific and used my name. And then CNN picked it up right after that, Howard Kurtz. And then they went — and then it was all over the place.

MCCLELLAN: Yes, there's...

O'REILLY: Now let me — look...

MCCLELLAN: There's...

O'REILLY: You seem, Scott, not to want to apologize to me. You don't have to, but I think you do owe me an apology.

MCCLELLAN: I think I did by saying I messed up. I think that that is…

O'REILLY: Well, you know, it would be better if you would say look, Bill, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do that.

MCCLELLAN: Well, I didn't mean to do that. I'm sorry, Bill. I didn't mean to do that.

O'REILLY: Fine. It only took me three minutes to get that out of you. Now I want you to say to the people who are listening that as far as you know, I never received a talking points from the White House.

MCCLELLAN: I don't know that. Yes, I don't. I have no knowledge of that.

O'REILLY: OK. So you have no knowledge that I received anything from the White House while you were there?

MCCLELLAN: Well, we sent out — we certainly sent out...

O'REILLY: But I — no, no, O'Reilly, O'Reilly.

MCCLELLAN: We sent out a lot of talking points to a lot of people. And certainly there are people at, you know, pundits and commentators...

O'REILLY: But not me.

MCCLELLAN: Other people that...

O'REILLY: Other people I don't care about, Scott.

MCCLELLAN: I know. They were friendly and that were sympathetic.

O'REILLY: Fine. And then you deal with them as you want to, but I never received the talking points.

MCCLELLAN: I understand why you got upset.

O'REILLY: All right, good.

MCCLELLAN: I understand...

O'REILLY: I'm glad you understand because my professional reputation is not going to be besmirched...

MCCLELLAN: No.

O'REILLY: ...by you or MSNBC or CNN or anybody else. That's outrageous. It ain't going to happen.

MCCLELLAN: I'm not trying to get into a fight between any of the network wars or anything like that. I'm not trying to...

O'REILLY: Well, if you keep going on these smear machines, you're going to get in a fight, Scott. You know, you're defined about who you hang with. Matthews played you. How many times have you been on that program, that network, 87 times?

MCCLELLAN: Matthews I've been on twice.

O'REILLY: You've been on that network all day, everyday to sell your book. I'm not apologizing for that.

MCCLELLAN: No, no, no, no.

O'REILLY: But he played you.

MCCLELLAN: No...

O'REILLY: You should be mad at him.

MCCLELLAN: So you don't owe me an apology for calling me a liar or calling me...

O'REILLY: You were a liar. You said I received talking points and I didn't.

MCCLELLAN: No, I didn't. I was not confirming that. I'm telling you that right now, I was not...

O'REILLY: You're parsing the damn thing. Come on, be honest.

MCCLELLAN: I am being honest.

O'REILLY: You say — do people say...

MCCLELLAN: You're not being honest...

O'REILLY: ...call Sean, call Bill and you said certainly. That's ridiculous. It's not true.

MCCLELLAN: No, I didn't get to finish my thought with that. You know the way these interviews go. Matthews is a guy that interrupts you just like you're interrupting now.

O'REILLY: That's right. He baited you. He baited you.

MCCLELLAN: But look, you said I look to be partners in this enterprise with NBC. That's not the case. That's not true. So you should apologize for that.

O'REILLY: You're crazy. You're partners with them in selling your book. They're playing you. They're manipulating you. They're using you.

MCCLELLAN: Everybody does that.

O'REILLY: And if you don't like to be used, be careful. I'm an honest purveyor of news and information, and I'm not going to let anybody imply that I'm not.

MCCLELLAN: That's fine. And I'm not trying to question your motivations, Bill.

O'REILLY: All right.

MCCLELLAN: I'm not going to get into it with you.

O'REILLY: I appreciate you coming on, Scott.

I never thought I would agree with you on anything political.  Your description of O'Reilly mirrors mine.  I don't even view him as a conservative, he's a separate unit unto himself.
But that stuff about a mouthpiece for the President Bush and the White House, come on.

bill is the man.   i have listened to him fillet people for years.  he doesnt lead,  he puts them on the spot and doesnt let it slide.  if only all reporters were like that, we might actually get some news instead of the propaganda we get now.   all these floundering, double -talking, slimely, tell-ya-what-they-think-ya-want-hear people make me wanna puke; and have helped the country to become the cess pool it is currently.

I go back to the time he had the swift boat veterans on his show.  He was rude and condescending to them.  He did his best to minimize what they had to say.  I don't easily forget.
I was glad to see him call out Scott McClellan the way he did, though.

Big Bill O is still a bore, always will be and always was, and so full of crap.  Ever hear him on radio..?  Almost embarrassing to listen to such a dope juiced on booze it seems, really dumb guy and defines party hack and Fix News is spoon fed their stories...it is so obvious..

The McClellan story is just TOTI,,,,more to come after Bush leaves. I happen to think it was pretty righteous of McClellan to spell it out what goes on with the most corrupt administration ever, and he is still breathing air. Tells a big story how some folks are quick to sacrifice principles for a hyjacked party.

As far as the Bush admin being the most corrupt, did you forget about the Clinton admin?? It was not all that long ago!!

i have listened to bill shred people like you  time and again within seconds.   call him up sometime; show him what kind of mastermind you are.  in less than a minute,  i am sure you would be stupidly stuttering something about "bush lied!" or "the jews!".    that is one of the great things about listening to the radio factor.

Bill O is a waterboy for a lot of psychopaths running things and a little ME apex country.  You can patronize him if you want, but 'pass the old el paso' for me.
I hope Scott McClellhan tells more truth once Bush regime leaves office and leaves us good people alone.

..TM7

Unlike others, at least Bill admits his political affiliation. Not like Olberman who pretends to be a nonpartisan but takes on the full and complete water boy role for the Liberal agenda as does most of the major networks like ABC, CBS & NBC. At least at Fox, the commentary partisans admit their political affiliation. The other networks which out number Fox by a great majority just blow smoke up your AZZ and pretend to be nonpartisan when is FACT they have their tongue machine shop fit in the Liberals AZZ.

I'll listen to Bill anyday over Olberman's political Liberal liar rants any day. Bill at least hits the issues head on and tells it like he sees it. Olberman is nothing more then a lying sack a crape with commentaries void of critical facts to support his tongue being up Obama and the rest of the Liberal communists back sides.

Yeah,  Olbermann is partial to the DNC but takes pot shots at OBama and the Dems, and he is an anti gunnner,,,after 7 years of Bush and the neocons and Big O the Water Boy one can't help or  miss taking pot shots at all them lying SOBs and their cooked intell and phony nwo crapola. Phew, its a wonder we still have a country.

..TM7

And Bill O takes pot shots all the time at Bush and the Republicans.... Again, the difference between Bill O and Olberman is Bill at least lets you know up front, he's NO Liberal. Olberman. Abrams, Mathews and the rest of their buddies at the big media outlets claim to be reporting the news and neutral. They are scum liars. Bill at least does not lie to us about his political standing. So weather you agree with him or not is irrelevant. Guys like Colmes over at Fox admits he's a Liberal. I respect him for that but disagree with what he has to say. I'm fine with that.

TM7,

Describe them any way you want. Their competitors are at least nothing less then the same thing on the opposite side of the political spectrum. So in this case, Fox is the only way and the sole outlet trying to bring balance to a media world over flowing and controlled by Liberals and their socialist communist agenda. Fox is clearly out numbered if you consider ABC, CBS, NBC, their affiliates and the printed paper media.

I'm surprised that given the incredible and overwhelming odds Fox faces, your not at all critical of the ocean of garbage that spews from their Liberal dogmatic competitors!

As I have stated, I don't care for O'Reilly, but at least he's honest.  Same with Hannity, same with Colmes.
I disagree with almost everything Colmes says, but he does not pretend to be something he's not.  Say what you want about Fox News, but I do not see the other networks displaying the same degree of honesty.  It's been like this for some time now.
If it were not for Fox, and radio talk shows, there would be a monopoly on the type of information put out by the press.  Some undoubtedly would prefer this.  I am not one.
I can remember a time when liberals would say, " I might disagree with what you say, but I'd defend with my life your right to say it. "
I don't hear that from liberals too much any more.
Many of today's liberals seem to be suffering from some form of weird mental illness.
I'm not saying this to be humorous either.

Pick your flavor as you like. For me Fox news leaves a bad after taste and is a perfect example Hegelian dialetics in practice......look it up.

If you've concluded that only Fox leaves a bad taste in your mouth, which ones leave a good taste?

He probably likes MSNBC, Moveon.org, and New York times.

Bill O is a waterboy for a lot of psychopaths running things and a little ME apex country.  You can patronize him if you want, but 'pass the old el paso' for me.
I hope Scott McClellhan tells more truth once Bush regime leaves office and leaves us good people alone.

Actually, Bill describes himself as an "independent."  Was a big fan until about the war with Iraq...  He stated several times if WMD's weren't found he would hold the Administration accountable.  What did he do?  Oh, he followed the White House and then started talking about how Iraq was a "terrorist enabler".  He's a TOOL!

Oh, good grief---Don't you people who post answers to TM7 understand that there is no debate.  All of you are WRong 100% of the time...of course, TM7 is correct 110% of the time.  When you grow up as a liberal democrat you are of course the most intelligent person in the world......But to many who can see through this facade, its just suffering from delusions of grandor....The only thing that you can do to offset his polemic outburst, are to learn to plagiarize, cut and paste and link to other conspiracy websites as he does......Dr. Superhornet
