What are the best G2 varmint calibers?
« on: July 28, 2008, 01:26:56 PM »
Situation: I travel extensively in the western US and carry varmint guns all the time but want to economize space in my truck.  Just recently got a G2 so I can eliminate all the big gun cases - and because it is such a fun gun.  The calibers I usually carry or shoot in bolt action are; 17 HMR, .222, .223, .204, 22-250, and .243.  The plan is to get G2 barrels in 17, .204 and 2 others in the .243 and 22-250 performance range.  Since the 6mm is so close to .243 I was going to go with that.  Question 1: What G2 compatible calibers would you suggest for 22-250 performace (fast & long range)?  Question 2: Would you suggest another caliber combo for coyotes, and critters?  Question 3: Or, should I just go with an Encore and use the calibers I already shoot.  Here is the caveat: Since I shoot alone most of the time I want to keep the recoil down in order to see the shots.  Thanks for any suggestions.

The closest you can get to .22-250 performance will be the .204. The Contender frame is not strong enough for larger high performance calibers.

Who knows what the best is...

I like a .204 Ruger but I also have .221 FB, .223 and a 6mm 30-30 AI that all have merit. As was posted you will not get barrels for a G2 in .243, 22-250 or anything else in that pressure level. The varmints you are wanting to hunt don't require more than what is available for a G2.

My .17 HMR barrel shoots under 3/4" @ 100 yd. consistently.  I also have a .22 Hornet that shoots under 1", and am considering a .17 Rem.

The G2 is lite weight. I would think that any thing with recoil more than a 223/204 would not let you see what you just shot at. I would think the 204 would be your best bet for a long range varmint gun in a G2. As far as the 17 calibers go, I would consider the Remington 17 FireBall (17 Mach IV). It comes within a couple hundred fps of the 17 Rem (4000 vs 4200) and will be much better on barrel wear and heat. BTW I have an older Contender frame with a 221 FB barrel, that I really like. Of course it is about a 200 yard gun, maybe a bit more. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

Depending on the ranges you want to shoot and at what, you could get by with just one barrel, or want several barrels.    Easy and cheapest answer if you want to stay with what you already shoot is to get an Encore rather than G2 frame as it will handle all of them safely.   Adds about a pound to the action weight as well, but you still will probably not see hits with the 22-250 or 243.   If you do want to stay with a G2 (or as I have with Classic Contender frames), the lower end is covered but a lot depends on if you are willing to do wildcats to match or exceed the 22-250 or 243.    Easily done with the wildcats available that are safe for the smaller frame, and there are many choices.     But they come at a price of custom or rechambered barrels, often expensive die sets and more brass prep and forming work.

I live in the west where both predators and varmints have been my mainstay for many decades.    And they are shot often with Contender pistols and carbines.   The possibilities are almost endless with cartridge choices, but certain ones do become favorites depending on what the target is, how far away it is and how high the winds are.   Some of them will do double duty, others are more specialized.   So it really just comes down to how much money you want to spend.

It's hard for me to go to the digger fields without a 17M2, 17HMR, 17 Ackley Hornet, 17 Remington (or equal wildcat) and 24, 25 or 26 caliber wildcats.    Covers all you can see as far away as you can see them.    On digger shoots I often take a dozen to dozen and a half choices along.   The 17's give you choices that will cover anything you can do with your 223 down and the wildcats will exceed what the 22-250 and 243 will do.

For predators it's hard to beat a 17 Rem (or 204 Ruger) or any of the wildcats that match them ballistically unless the ranges get longer.   When they do the 24, 25, and 26 wildcats take up the slack.

On a duel P&V hunt I just have to have a 17 rimfire along, a 17 Ackley Hornet for the most fun wildcat there is, a 17 Rem or one of my wildcats that approximates it and one of the 24, 25 or 26 wildcats for when the ranges get long and winds high.  So I guess my minimum would be 4 barrels even though I could easily get by with one if I had to and just limit my shots.

If you don't want to dive into wildcats at all with a G2, I'd probably opt out for choices like a 17 rimfire, 22 Hornet, a 17 or 221 Fireball, a 17 Rem or 204/222/223 and maybe a 7-30 Waters for the longer, windy shots.

If you decide you do want to dwell in the smaller frame wildcats, I've done most of them over the years and can offer some insight on them.    Just drop me a PM with what might interest you for suggestions.

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Thanks for the responses everyone.  Ladobe, I see your points but I'm trying to reduce the number of guns I'm carrying  not increase 'em.  The objective is to limit it at 3 barrels - otherwise I could take my Encore and limitless barrels.  Cost is not factor - just concerned about availability of brass and dies.  Just want to cover all the varmint/predator options with 3 barrels in a G2.  After serious consideration of many calibers and seeing many 500 yard shots with .204's in Varmint Hunter magazine maybe I ought to start with just the 17 HMR and .204 as they seem to cover most shooting situations, critters, and yardage.  Although thoughts of a 17 Remington or 17 Fireball keep dancing in my head.......

I,m big on the contender as a camping gun, backpacking, car camping or boat camping. I,ve got the 375 JDJ the 223 rem. and I think the 17 hmr is next.223 cheapest over the counter centerfire, can be reloaded light and hot. Never have had a 17hmr but I,d like one. Had a 17 rem. lots of  fun in a small package.Love to play with a 17 fireball. But I am trying to economize and the 223 win,s., I really like walking around with a light rifle good binoculars nice quite mornings, never know what you will find. The contender does have its limits and it can,t do every thing its a small package!

Au contraire mon ami!  Contenders have taken elephant, antelope out past 300 yards...what can't the right barrel do?  ;)

.

Can't make up for poor hunting or shooting skills.

It Wouldn't be my first choice for dangerous game but in thirty years of hunting I have never felt limited in what a Contender can do. Among other things I have taken three very nice elk, several deer(both whitetails and mulies), two large antelope bucks, every kind of small game there is, thousands of prairie dogs, several coyotes all whilst being strapped to a Contender of some sort. The limiting is more in the operator and less in the gun.
