Thell Reid went into the Marine Corps and shot exhibition for them as a recruitment stunt, he could carry his government issue 1911 in the then issue full flap holster and have the chamber empty, and draw the gun/rest the front sight on the leading edge of his holster/push it down to cock the gun and shoot in less than 1 second? Thell Ried was a phenomenal shooter and got the Marines several recruits in the process.

S.B. I think that another variation of this existed but came from the old west. The shooter would be using and Open top & open toed holster and simply tilt the holster forward as it was on a pivot and then start firing. This was known as a crossbreed rig,  I guess that not many used them but those that did were usually very good.
Just a point of intrest and sorry for blowing the post...I am a crossdraw man myself.

It's only safe to carry cocked and locked if you have the right holster for it. Otherwise the safety will switch off and it will be cocked and not locked. Voice of experience speaking here.

It may not be a 1911, but if you are worried about carrying a 1911 cocked and locked , get a springfield armory XD-45. Same ammo, More ammo capacity, no exposed hammer, and still has a grip saftey.

cocked and locked is the only way to carry one on your person period! I do vary a little from most though. I allways have a 1911 handy. theres one in the bedstand one in my truck one in my jeep and usually one in my wifes car. those 1911s are carried hammer down on an empty chamber. I do this for a couple reasons. I have grand kids around all the time and it just seems safer to leave them like that. Its pretty easy if you practice to grab one and rack the slide.

Good points Lloyd and it's pretty difficult for a youngster to rack the slide on a stock 1911.

Any firearm I own that is "In Service" is fully loaded/chambered. Only those in the safe are unloaded. No confusion as to condition of any of my "Ready" firearms, and they are not accessable to unauthorized persons.

IMO, a ready gun should be just that, "Ready". It's foolish (again, IMO) to have firearms in service that require different manipulations to make them hot. I live in the real world where unattended firearms could be a hazard to some adults as well as children. I have grandchildren and family with children. When anyone other than my wife and I are in my house, ALL firearms are secured, other than the ones carried "On Body". I don't leave firearms in my vehicles either. Even when I parked my police unit in my drive, the firearms came in with me overnight. Do whatever makes you feel good about your ready weapons, mine are always ready!

I feel a lot safer with a Colt cocked and locked than my Glock .45 with a round in the chamber.  It is my concealed carry gun, and if it is not in an ankle holster, i leave the chamber empty.  Of course it is usually in an ankle rig.

As others have said, it's the visable hammer that gets in their head. I had dozens of persons sidle up and quietly inform me that my pistol was cocked when carrying a 1911 as a duty gun.  I don't see how anyone concerned with the safety of condition one carry with a 1911, could be ok with carrying a Glock/M&P/XD, or any other striker fired pistol without a manual safety.  I frequently carry Glocks, but it is second nature to me to keep my finger clear of the trigger unless the situtation dictates otherwise. To each his own!

I started shooting at seven. My son started shooting at six. My grandkids started shooting at six. What makes a gun dangerous to little people is when they haven't been exposed to them, trained how to be safe with them, and don't,or can't appreciate what they are capable of doing when handeled improperly.

There is no other way to carry a 1911 safely than cocked and locked. Safe for you and dangerous for the bad guy! I am exploring "Condition 0" though, I find that the best answer to the "diminished fine motor skills" debate.
