Mossberg 800/810 barrel threads?
« on: July 29, 2008, 01:44:16 PM »
I've run across a number of Mossberg 800/810's for pretty good prices in the last few years.  Probably 3/4's of them of them are in .30-06 though, which I certainly don't need (love the round but I already got 2 '06's).  Anyways, since I like unique stuff, I figured it might be interesting to have one rebarreled to something like 6.5x55 or something similar, since the factory never offered them in that.

With that in mind, most rebarreling shops don't exactly advertise a Mossberg as one of the actions they'll rebarrel.  I assume though, that if the threads are the same as some other common action then it shouldn't be much of a problem for a competent shop.  So, given that Google hasn't exactly been helpful, I figured I'd check here: do any of you guys know the barrel thread pattern used on these rifles?  Or, any other advice/information regarding rebarreling one would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If you have the action in hand to fit the barrel to it is an easy task.  When you remove the old barrel just measure the thread pitch and diameter, from the pitch you get the depth of the threads.  The barrel is turned to the proper diameter and then threads cut  in until it fits the receiver, no guess work, it will then fit perfect, better than any pre fit barrel.  Any good shop will be able to do it as easily as for any other rifle they are fitting a barrel to.  Only other thing to watch for is if there are any cuts in the breach for extractors, feed ramps etc that need to be clocked in a certian position, this may be the show stopper for you.  Larry
