Hornady SST

Does anyone have any experience with these bullets. I am thinking of using these in my 308 for pa. whitetails, are these bullets designed for longer ranges??. where I hunt most shots are less than 100 yds. I have read some good reviews but most shots were 200yrds or more.Thanks for your opinions in advance.

They will work well under 100yds. I also wouldn't say they are designed to long range as they work well for both.

I used a 140 gr. SST in 270 Win. on an eleven point whitetail in 06. He was approximatly 80 yards and the bullet went all the way through him and he dropped in his tracks. This is the only experience I've had with the SSTs but I will use them again if I get the chance.

They tend to make a mess of a deer, but they are effective and accurate out of my A-Bolt.

I took one deer with a 165gr .30 cal. SST. My son has used 139gr 7MM SSTs for several years but has switched to 139gr Hornady flat base bullets.They work OK but are like any other polymer tipped bullet, they expand quickly at short range.

i have only shot one deer with them but they worked. I have also tried them on small feral hogs they work well for ones under 100 pounds.

Just this year my boys and I have killed 3 deer with 154gr 7mm sst and thay preformd grate. long or short range.
I have killed several elk with the 338 225 sst and have never had a problem .

I shot the Hornady Light Mag 139gr loads out of my .280 for several years. Performance on deer over a hundred yards was amazing, but rarely got a pass thru on shots any closer. The bullets simply would not hold up at the light mag velocities (3100fps). This may have something to do with the fact that I typically shoot em thru the shoulders. Thick woods and swamps are tough to track in. I know shoot Federal Fusions and love them. If your shots are gonna be close I'd stick with something that doesn't expand as fast.

I've shot six deer deer from 40 to 220 yards with 139gr SSTs out of my 280 Rem (mv chrony'd at 3K).   No deer went over 30 yards or so and I got exits on all deer.   It did bloodshot more meat than I'd like but I could not find fault in the bullet's performance at all.  I have switched to standard Interlocks in the same weight for personal preferences but if I had a boat load of SSTs, I'd still be using them without question.

My son and I have killed several deer an hogs with them.   I would recommend the 165 grain as the 150's destroy a lot of meat.
