Looks like I need to go rabbit hunting!!!!!!!
« on: July 29, 2008, 03:05:14 PM »
I went out this morning to look at the garden and noticed the rabbits did a number on my green bean plants last night. They ate the shoots and half the leaves on about 8 or 10 plants. I don't live in the city limits but I still have neighbors with in 150 feet of the garden so a 22 LR is out of the question. Looks like I need to buy a BB or pellet gun or one that shoots both. I like the rabbits but not when they are eating my garden. I have at least 6 or 8 of them around my house that I have noticed over the summer. Do any of you have a suggestion for a BB pellet rifle for $50.00 or less? I think one that takes CO2 might be best. I have not shot one since I was a kid and wonder how far it will be accurate? My shots would be less than 60 feet. Dale

I'm not an expert, but  to get a quick clean kill you will need to spend more than that. Other options might be a slingshot, wrist rocket  , bow and arrow, maybe even a blowgun. If you know someone that has one maybe you could borrow a more powerful air rifle. You might even be able to get a live trap for around your price range.I just wouldnt trust a BB gun to put a rabbit down fast.

.22 BB caps or a box of .22 Sub-Sonic loads work good for the Bean Eaters you reference.  They don't have a long range like the rest, but can solve a problem like yours.  They also work on Skunks, Cats and Rats.  I used .22 Bird Shot on a Squirrel already.

The .22 BB caps come in a 100 Count Tin and are basically a .22 BB that will work if you load one at a time.

Sub-Sonic .22 loads are basically a .22 Short with a smaller powder charge that keeps the report at a minimum.  Sub-Sonics don't break the sound barrier and will not pass through a 2x4 at 5 feet.

In any case, you still have to watch what is down range of the shot.

This looks like it might do the trick. It is a rifled barrel pellet rifle that will shoot at 1000 fps. I think that is pretty good for a pellet rifle. Looks like I can it for under $100.00. Dale             http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8586192
