PF9 Range Report
« on: July 31, 2008, 11:28:50 AM »
I finally made it to the range with a bunch of guns that I've aquired over the last year or so, the PF9 was one of them, I don't shoot pistol much, used to shoot a flintlock pistol at blackpowder rendezvous, but haven't since '98, bought a PF9 last fall, carried it during spring turkey season and took a couple shots for function, until yesterday that's all I'd done with it other than clean it. I shot it while waiting for rifle barrels to cool, shot this 14 shot group with 2 different loads, American Eagle and Remington UMC, the first three rounds went high, two just cutting the paper, then I got used to the 2 breath trigger and pulling all of the travel out of it before the final stage, and continued shooting the rest into a group that's ~3¼"x2" at 7yds, the AE ammo grouped slightly right of center and the Rem ammo hit pretty much center.  I was real happy since some have said the PF9 is hard to just keep it on the paper!! ;D

I have had no problems with my PF9. It's one of the earlier models. I'm told it was one of the first to become available in my state. I can't claim a zillion round count thru the pistol as I  have probably shot it less than 300 times in the couple of years that I've owned it. Now that I have learned the sights and trigger, the gun shoots far better than a pistol of this size and caliber should. I consider the pistol to be a winner for it's designed purpose. Enjoy yours!

I have owned my PF9 for several months, and I think it is great for what it was designed for.
I have put more than a hundred rounds thru mine. It does let you know when it goes off, but then, if/when I need it that would be the least of my cares. My gunsmith told me of a type of military oil/lub for it, that does soften the recoil and as per claims " lengthens the life of the weapon" known to be appox. 6000 rds. My shooting partners liked shooting it also.

So...  are you sworn to secrecy or something?  What is the name of this lube and where can we find it?

Any lube that softens recoil woud have to do so by hydralic action. Talking about a good way to induce malfunctions!! If I'm missing something here, someone point it out for me.

I'm glad you guys have had good luck with your PF9s, the one I had didn't measure up to what I had expected. The trigger pull was so long and hard that it was almost impossible to hit anything with it. I had several others fire this pistol and all agreed with my assessment. It could have been that one in a million but it didn't suit my purpose. I bought a Ruger P95 and am very happy with it. It is bigger but much easier to operate and, so far, more reliable and more accurate.

I had some trouble getting used to mine at first but, now that I have learned the trigger pull, I really like it.  It's definitely not my main carry but it's great when all I can conceal is an ankle rig or something.  It wasn't made to be a range accurate gun, it was made to be tactical accurate.  Once you get used to the trigger, there's no problems keeping rounds in a center mass target at 7 to 10 yards.

Well, I have to say that Quick's group is about as good as I've come to expect from a defensive 9mm.  Some full sized guns will shoot better but I have to say that it is a much better group than my old P-38 Walther would ever shoot!  I'm impressed enough that it meets my minimum requirements for a carry pistol.  Since my accident, I have had difficulty carrying my Defender or S&W snub.  I'm thinking that I may have to go to the Kel-tec and get a lighter, flatter package.  Thanks Quick, I appreciate the info.  44 Man

Ok, I'm decided.  Jay's has a PF9 in stock and I'm going to go and put some money on it.  I don't remember what color it is, I do remember it is not the black/black that I would prefer.  I have a Colt Lt wt Commander on layaway and I think I will let that go and put that money on the Kel-tec.  I have wanted a Lt wt Commander for a while but again, that is not what I will use for a carry pistol since I have the Colt Defender for the times I want a .45.  Actually since the accident, I have not even been able to carry the Defender although I have tried several times.  It's a shame, but I do have to move down to a lighter, smaller pistol for CCW.  So, thanks to Quick and Savage and others who have left feed back on the PF9.  I'm on my way.  44 Man.

Enjoy.  They're great guns for their intended purpose.  If you ever want a good ankle rig for it, check this one out:

http://www.fobusholster.com/products/KEL_TEC_PF9_ANKLE_HOLSTER-3056-46.html

I've had it a for a few weeks now and it's good and broken in.  It fits great and doesn't slide any due to the suede interior.  The retention screw holds the gun very tightly and I haven't had any problems.  Great for backup carry.

Just got back from the range with my new PF-9.  Kind of cold and blustery.  Had the range to myself.  Fired over a hundred rounds of WWB using 3 different magazines for break-in.  Then fired a few mags of Federal LE Tactical HST 124gr.  No malfunctions of any kind!

I had already done the KTOG's 'fluff and buff,' put a radius on the trigger opening, straightened the trigger a bit, and polished the ramp.

My groups were similar to quickdtoo's but I think the pistol will do better with more concentration.    I was shooting about two inches left and a tad high - offhand at 10 yds.  I thought it must be the gun, but from a rest it was dead on.  So, I guess I was 'pushing' it a bit - haha.  Small handguns really magnify errors.

Overall, I am a very happy camper.  BTW, I was really impressed with the quality of the mags.  Looked like Mec-Gar.  I later checked Mec-Gar's site and Kel-Tec is listed as one of the manufacturers they suppy OEM mags for.

I carry my PF9 alot, and probably shot 300 to 400 rounds out of it with 0 malfunctions. In fact, I have used it to shoot an IDPA-syle match against some full-sized single-stacks and beat most of them. The only disadvantage was slow magazine changes due to the small size of the gun. BTW, the recoil feels about the same as my Commander shooting 230 grain .45s.

I carry it mine in a Kydex IWB holster and I can conceal it under a T-shirt. I am a big fan of this little gun!!!

I am also a big fan of the P9.  For me Its used as a pocket pistol or carried in a small pop open storage bin in the dash of my  car.
While I can shoot it accurately in slow fire at longer ranges, in speed situtations it would be limited to 7 yards or less.
Very reliable for the couple of hundreds I have fired in it.
Remember when shooting smooth is fast and accurate.

The PF9 has become the most carried of my ccw's closely followed by it's little bro, the P3AT. Usually in a jacket pocket or front pants pocket. I also am getting a side clip for both shortly. Great gun, and my groups are just a little wider than these. That's me and not the gun, though. Mine shoot as well as a friends Khar.

Hi guys!  Have had my pf9 about 2 years now and use it as my main concealed carry piece. On a good day at the range, i can usually keep about five out of seven rounds in a one inch bullseye at seven yards. The loooong double action only trigger pull definitely took some getting used to, but you gotta practice, practice and then practice some more. I shoot PMC at the range , then stuff it with federal 137 grain hydro shocks when i carry concealed.

Bought a P9 today and took it out and shot 1 mag thru it. Shoots a little high, trigger will take some getting used to, recoil hurt my old arthritic hands a bit but I'll get over it. would have shot more but it started to rain. I've been carring it's little brother (P3at) for about a year. Think I'm going to like it to. No failures to feed with my cast bullet reloads, didn't get a chance to try the jhc bullets, maybe tomorrow.

If you liked its little brother (P3AT), I feel sure that you will really come to like the 9.  My daughter didn't care for the .380 but she really likes to shoot her PF9.  She shoots it well and carries it regularly.  She liked it so well that I bought one for myself.

That's a much better group than I could get out of mine.  I had two, my son wanted one for a gun to leave in his truck, the other one went to a gun show and found a new home.  I thought the trigger sucked, the gun was light but not built near as well as a P-64 Makorov which is slightly smaller than the PF9.  I'm back to a J frame in .357 or the Makorov for most of my carry.

Got out again with my pf9 yesterday, shot a few 125gr cast, kinda rough on my hands then I tried some 95gr cast and they shot great and didn't beat up my hands to bad, gun functioned fine with both no failure to feed or fire. Did have smilies on the 125gr bullets but all feed fine. Think I'll go with the 95 gr for my pf9 and save the 125gr for my sig.

Well early this summer I had the pleasure of working with my wife, as she wanted to get her CCW permit. This alone was a bigger task than I ever would have immagined,  when it came to choosing a pistol, that she could shoot well enough and yet carry concealed on her person. Now in hot weather most women wear shorts and a top, does not leave much to hide things that were not naturally given. We went through a lot of those small pocket pistols too, including 3 various models of the KEL-TEC order. The P-11 was just out of the question for her, especially with that Loooooong trigger pull that seemed to be around 12 pounds.

We tried the Walthers, and Ruger LCP (junk) and a couple of snub nosed revolvers too in the .38spl caliber. We started off with a .380 Sig Sauer and went up the ladder from there, not without slipping now and then understand. All in all the wife went through something like 8 different pistols and 4 different calibers before she got her CCW permit.

I kept the last PF-9 she purchased and it will shoot 4 inch groups at 45 ft! I was impressed at that fact, it was much more accurate than the first two Kel-Tecs we tried. The wife now carries a Glock 22 in the .40cal and is happy Amen!

Tonk,
How in the world does your wife conceal a duty size pistol in light clothing? My wife carries a P-32 in her front pocket using the pocket clip. Anything else is to large for her to conceal in light clothing.

Since this thread is about the PF9, thought I'd share this.  I was driving thru the front pasture the other day and spotted a nice fat Jack Rabbit hunkered down under a Mesquite Tree...I rolled to a stop about as close as I thought I could get without spooking him, laid the old PF9 out the driver's window of the P/U got a good rest on the mirror and BAM...one dead Jack Rabbit.  I stepped it off at 25 steps.  I sure like my PF9, I hope you enjoy yours

Savage, it is not a problem when she carries her purse ok! Now that cooler weather has arrived and she wears a light jacket, things are easier for her to conceal. The KEL-TEC PF-9 that is downstairs in the safe is very very accruate for a cheap pocket pistol. I have shot 2.5 inch groups with this pistol at 21 feet.

My biggest complaint about this PF-9 is this, If in the heat of battle, one does not let that trigger go all the way forward after firing a shot, it will NOT FIRE THE NEXT SHOT. Now those that have them, should try to fire 6 shots from that pistol as fast as they can pull the trigger and then see what happens.........Do this for 3 magazines full of ammo.

My hands are not large but I still wish the trigger guard area for the index finger were larger. Perhaps KEL-TEC will address this problem in the future like so many other "up grades" they seem to have made.

Bought a PF-9 about three months ago ..........

........ sure glad I did ........ I have some real dandy Double action revolvers that I would rather be packin' if it hits the fan .......

....... but the PF-9 is ALWAYS with me ..... and that trumps even a 105 howitzer sitting back at the house!!!

Tonk,
Trigger reset hasn't been a problem for me with the PF-9. I can see where it could be. Hey, lots of experienced revolver shooters "Short Cycle" the trigger now and then in competition events. Not to mention pump shotguns when fired under stress.

Savage, the only place nowdays, that I really carry the Kel-Tec PF-9 in around the house watering flowers etc. or feeding the birds. It does fit very well in my front shorts pocket but I never leave the house with that particular pistol ok.

I have come to rely upon either my Sigs or lately my Glocks in the 10mm & 45acp calibers. I use one, Glock model 29 with a cross-draw holster and the other, Glock model 21-SF in 45acp, I carry straight up at a 15 degree angle of the grip on my right hip. My Sigs are both in 40 cal and I prefer the 45acp and the 10mm over the .40cal anyday.
