3 weeks and heading to Maine for my Black bear hunt. :)
« on: August 01, 2008, 01:02:21 AM »
Time is getting close, I am going to Wade Maine for a handgun black bear hunt with a buddy of mine. We both are using our handguns, and will be hunting from ground blinds, anywhere from 7 to 20 yards from the bait.  We are going with Wild Country Outfitters, http://www.mainewildcountryoutfitters.com/index.html

I have been talking with the owner/guide, Peter Koch, and he has been keeping me updated on bear he is seeing in the bait sights. We will be hunting the first week  of bear season on the 25th.

My buddy is using his S&W 500 Mag, and I will be using my Gary Reeder custom 510 GNR.  I will give a full report when I get back. :D

Best of luck Red!!  We'll need pics!

I'm also going to Maine for the last week of the season (Sept 15th).  I'm going to the Oxbow in Oxnbow Maine.  Will be using my Brown Precision Custon Ruger 77 in 300win (200gr NosAB's).  Way more gun than I need, but...what the heck.....

I can hardly wait to hear how everyone does this year.  I'm going to be leaving in two weeks for the opening week in Ontario.  I'm getting so excited I can hardly stand the wait!  You just can't beat a bear hunt with fishing all around!  I finally decided on taking my 30-06 as my primary hunting rifle.  I've got some 220gr handloads that should do the trick.  I'll be testing my 30-30 & 44 mag this weekend and take whatever works better as a backup gun in case something should happend to either my rifle/scope or my hunting partners rifle/scope.  This will be my first hunt using my handloads instead of factory rounds so it adds a little more flavor to the mix.

We leave Friday night the 15th and we'll get there early enough in the morning on the 16th to catch a couple hour nap before we go out hunting that night.

There will definately be pictures.  I'm hoping to get some video if I can ever get my video camera to download into my computer.  I bought a sony handycam before the bear hunt in 2005 and haven't been able to download any of the video to my computer yet.  I'll figure it out if I ever spend the time on it.

teddy12b, I have that same Sony handycam, I have a few hunts on mine, my water buffalo hunt in 2005, my Maine black bear hunt in 2005 and my black bear hunt in 2007 in Canada.

I am hoping to film this hunt also. I have my tripod and camera ready to go.

My Sony Handycam is the kind that takes miniDV's (little tapes).  I was messing around with it last night and still couldn't figure out how to get the video to transfer over to the computer.  It's kind of frustrating.

teddy12b, mine take the mini-dvd's. The small disc's.
I have watched mine on my Computer, but I don't know how to save them either.

Mine uses the mini-DV's.  The minidv's are little tapes.  The whole things is a pain in the rear.  I'd like to sell mine on ebay, but I'd get 1/5th of what I paid for it even though it's practically new.

My regular digital camera can capture sound while on video mode so I'm probably going to buy a huge memory card off of ebay for it and use it like a video camera.  It's amazing how the price the exact same memory card is 1/3 the price brand new on ebay than what it is in stores.

I'm getting so sick of my job right now I can hardly wait another week and a half to get away and go hunting & fishing.

I have to go out of my State anyways, no black bear in Delaware.  Maine and Canada are the places I go the most too.

I'll also be up in Maine for some black bear hunting. Leaving Aug 31st and hunting the following day.

I'll be shooting a 20" T/C ProHunter in 45/70. I'll bring a SRH in 44mag just in case. It shoots very well with 300gr XTP bullets.

I tried groundblinds in the past but much prefer the visibility from a treestand. I'm just an ol' bowhunter at heart. ;D

Good luck guys.

Varmint Hunter, I have hunted from stands and from the ground. I like the idea of being up close and personal.

Sounds like you are set for your hunt, good luck to you as well.  ;)

Funny story:

When our guide was giving us the traditional speech about safety and the rules of the camp he reminded everyone that "we never shoot a sow with cubs". Seeing that my groundblind was less than 25 yards from the bait I just had to ask - if a sow with cubs comes in to the bait while I'm on the ground isn't she HIGHLY likely to know that I'm there?

Response: Well yeaaaah.....

Question: Well what if she decides to protect  the cubs by charging me in that flimsy blind?

Response: Than you better shoot fast before she gets you!!!!!

Very comforting  :D ::) :D

Leaving in the morning to Maine...  ;D

Got a report form one of my buddies that is in Canada hunting black bear. The outfitter told him on the first week of black bear season, he had one hunter that was in the tree stand, and he had another guy filming the hunt from a ground blind under the stand, that they just put up. As soon as the bear came into the bait, the bear saw the ground blind and charged it, the hunter in the tree stand shot the bear before it got to the guy in the ground blind.
And people say black bear is not dangerous.  :o

They probably should have put the cameraman in the stand and the hunter on the ground. Did the guy in the blind get any good video or was he too busy filling his boxers? ;D

I am very interested in hearing about the Maine hunts. I live in Florida but have family in Maine and Mass. Being new to whitetail deer hunting (I've done exotics and hogs) and never having hunted bear, but very interested, I've been wanting to head to Maine. Several of the outfitters I have talked to say that deer hunting isn't that great in Maine. Anyone deer hunt Maine too?

Thanks!!

I was born and raised in Maine. 50 years ago my grandfather whined about the decline of the deer hunting and about the great numbers he always used to see. I left Maine for Wyoming 23 years ago and it hadn't gotten any better. Go planning to visit your family and friends and do some hunting. Non resident tags are easy to get and not expensive. I've gone back to hunt, but the visiting was always better.

Good idea. I have been thinking about planning a Thanksgiving vacation to my parents in Boston with my family and then heading to Maine (to my uncles) for a day or two of deer hunting. He doesn't hunt but he ownes several hundred acres on an island just off the coast of Maine. He says that he sees deer out his front window at least once a week when he is at the island (he lives in Portland, ME and spends a several weeks a year at the island). I can't believe I've never gone there before (not to hunt anyway)...but I am pretty inexperienced when it comes to hunting. If he were a hunter and could show me the way...I'm sure I would have gone by now.

Maine is a state with vast wilderness areas and is ideal for black bear. The whitetails are less numerous but they are BIG. Every deer that my buddy killed there was impressive.

I was hunting black bear in Maine this past spring and hit some rainy weather. Only saw 1 bear in 4 days. However, we saw 9 moose, including the one who charged the pick-up and ran into the grill. The tip of his nose was on the windshield and he was agitated.  :o

I think I may consider a moose hunt for next year if I can get a non-resident tag.

I am a Maine hunter. I have been going for 20 years and I have tagged two deer(deer #1 a 19pt dressed out at 190 lbs and deer #2 an 11 pt dressed out at 229 lbs). MY family owns a camp in the Old town area. Yes the woods are very thick a 50 yd shot is about max and no frequently encountered, with the not so occasional 100 yd shot. I know of and seen many bears taken. My cousin had taken one 30 yerars ago 180 lbs i believe. I have not seen one (plenty of sign) in the woods in my 20 years. Yes the deer are few especially in north easter part of the state. If you go to the western and southern (private land) you will have success. It's a different way of hunting and you either like it or you don't. I love going and enjoying the woods. I was told by one of the old timers at the camp, "You come up here for a vacation and IF you are lucky enough to get a deer consider it a bonus". I have lived by his words and enjoyed myself every year. I would rather be in the woods hunting that at work.

I follow what that old timer told you.  Hunting is the fun part, if you get something that's just a bonus.  I don't have to shoot something to enjoy myself hunting.  It's just a bonus to get the meat in the freezer.

I live in Northern Maine and FWIW.  Some of you hit the nail on the head.  Deer are not that plentiful in the northern areas of the state.  There are some but not like the rest of the state. Very hard hunting with thick woods and dense swamps.  Thousands of acres of un broken woods and swamps.  There are deer but unless your lucky it's hard to find them deep in the woods. The guys that get deer year after year in Northern Maine usually track them on snow.  They cut a track and follow it till they jump the deer.  You may take one once in a while standing in a field or crossing a logging road,  I have myself.  However IMHO tracking is the best way to get them year after year.   The mid and southern parts of the state are more open with farming fields and more deer.  If you want deer the normal way then the southern part of the state is where to go.  If you want to hunt deer the traditional way that Mainer's have been hunting for a 100 years. Then head north and bring your snow shoes.  ;)

Bear are a different story.  The north has bear and lots of them.  They are every where and the bear hunting season is long. There is a bait season, a dog season and a general hunting season.  I can see bear almost every day of the week.  I have them on my camp porch, in my garden, and even looking in my window at my house.  The old saying around here is "there are more bear than people".  The moose population is stable in the north and we have a lotery draw for permits. With all the logging the new growth trees are prime moose areas.  Moose can be seen about any night on a drve to town.  Just last night I lost all the cabage in my garden to a cow and a calf.  Moose have killed 7 new apple trees in my orchard and got all my neighbors blue berries. However they are tasty so we put up with them!  ;D  Northern Maine is also home to a large population of coyotes, bobcats, fisher, marten,  fox, otters, beaver and most other fur.  It's an ideal area for a trapper.
