BUFFALO KILLED WITH 30/30 ONE SHOT
« on: August 01, 2008, 05:42:39 AM »
I SAW ANOTHER HUNTING SHOW WHERE THIS GUY KILLED A 2000 POUND BUFFALO. THE GUIDE TOLD HIM TO AIM SIX INCHES BEHIND THE HORN THE BULL DROPPED RIGHT THERE. THE SHOT WAS A HUNDRED YARDS DIDN'T GET THE BULLET TYPE. THE HUNTING SHOW WAS THE QUEST FOR THE ONE.

And if he'd missed and shot the poor tame creature in the jaw they would have just chased it around the pasture a bit and shot it again... Come one people, think for yourselves before posting something dumb.

Obviously a 30-30 can kill a buffalo... and .223 can kill one, but if you think there aren't more appropriate choices you're an idiot.

No suprises here.  The .30-30 is plenty for bison or moose if you can shoot.  If you can't shoot, nothing is big enough.

"Gun lovers have their own guns and it is not well to argue with them. For many years I carried restocked Springfields, Mausers and others. Now I carry a 30-30 Winchester carbine with sling. The much improved cartridge in this weapon will stop a moose or a bear without trouble. The gun is small, light, has good balance for carrying, and is convenient. For safety the sling is looped around a thwart in a canoe and around a cross bar or a lash rope on a dog sled."

Calvin Rutstrum

Most folks just can't shoot, so they try to compensate.

Writer Calvin Rutstrum prepared countless future disciples for canoe travel in ''The Way of the Wilderness.''   Mr. Rutstrum's 15 books, most of which were written at his cabin on Cloud Bay, Ontario, described his enchantment of the wilderness and instructed readers on preparing for and conducting canoe trips into remote areas. He made frequent and extensive journeys into the Canadian wilderness.   His first book, ''The Way of the Wilderness,'' was published in 1946 and is considered the bible of serious canoeists. Other books include ''Back Country,'' ''The Wilderness Route Finder,'' ''Paradise Below Zero,'' ''Challenge of the Wilderness,'' ''The Wilderness Cabin'' and ''Chips from a Wilderness Log.''

A quote from a winderness junkie about guns may or may not be relevant, but at least the poster is well read on canoeing the winderness....

Saw the TV show last night (I taped it on my DVR).  It's called "The One".  My opinion is that the shooter is a bit pompous.   On one show he stalked a 400lb boar in an open flood plain.....WOW...what a man.

Anyway, I saw him shoot the bison on the show.  I'd like to have been there.  I expect the shot was ALOT closer than the 100yards he said he shot at (w a Lever action trigger and buckhorn sights no less).  I suspect there was some black magic or maybe "the rest of the story" that was "edited out".  I don't doubt a 30/30 could kill a bison...i killed one...w a .375HH.  But...really...a 270 would have worked just fine.  A 30/30....a surgically placed shot behind the ear.... at 100yards..... w iron sights....I'm not buying it.

A friend of mine swears he can hit a silver dollar at 100 yards with his thutty thutty every time. I suspect that once upon a truly long time ago perhaps when he was 35-40 years younger there was some tiny bit of truth behind what he might have ONCE done but to repeat it at will not likely.

We did talk him into joining us once for a rimfire rifle match at my best friend's back yard range since he was such an excellent shot. He never returned again and nope he didn't win nuttin that day.  ;D

A farmer would think nothing of killing a huge steer/bull with his .30-30 in the feed lot.  It's a Bison a.k.a cow for gosh sakes.  Even a lung/heart shot would have killed it dead.

A farmer killing a cow in a feedlot has a lot in common with that "hunter" killing that buffalo...

Exactly right Dukkillr, I hope no one sees a parallel because there is not one.

A feedlot is a totally different situation. Dad used to shoot our Hogs in the head at point blank range with a 22 short or long rifle, & you can pop them in the woods with a 22mag up close between the eye & ear or somewhat further with a 223 with the same placemant, but that does not make them allround shoulder smashing Hog guns.

???  I keep giving the huh sign because I don't understand the purpose of this thread. So this person pulled off
the head shot with a round that is NOT a Buffalo round. Now what? Should we start Deer Hunting with a .17 Fireball , Elk with a 243, Buffalo with a 257 Roberts thru 30-30 & Brown Bear with a 35Rem.

So, what's this about?   ??? ??? ???

Perhaps we should just realize the .30-30 in the hands of a good shot can cleanly harvest anything in North America.  That said, I'd probably feel a little under gunned on the large bears.

Or, prehaps we don't judge a cartridge with one head shot, at least if logic is involved in the process.

Speaking as someone who owns a couple of 30-30's, I will be like Chief Dan George on this one. THEN YOU USE IT.

Just got to say it ! I have a friend, Brad Dickey, that lives in Palmer Alaska. He has killed  almost every critter in Alaska with a .22-250 Personally I think he is crazy. I went with him as a back up to get a kodiak, saw lots of bears but he nevergot the shot angle he wanted. I was carrying a .375 (game and fish said I had to) I would have gotten something bigger if I could have.   I guess the point is you can get almost anything with a well placed shot but it doesn"t make it an ideal cartridge for the job. When I was on the farm, I killed a lot of hogs for grampaw to smoke with a .22 short.
I'm getting up in years too and my guns are gettting smaller and lighter and I still get my game !

Why in the world would you resurrect this pointless year old thread THAT YOU'VE ALREADY COMMENTED ON to make some totally irrelevant and incongruous statement............Unless of course someone is phishing for drama ::)

No doubt that was his goal.  Read the comment, look at the date, only trying to pick a fight... no clue why you would do that though?

Let's not derail the topic.  Why is it that's all anyone wants to do?

Whats the difference in a 30-30 at a hundred yards and a 3006 at 500 ? Seems distance makes the difference really close . A 22 is what many kill a cow or hog with along with an air powered bolt gun . Several reasons really , cost , happen to have one and don't want to kill another cow or hog with a pass thru. shot . In some hunting a larget gun/bullet combo is insurance for bad shot placement , bad bullet , poor quality load etc. No one mentioned if the guide was armed and if so with what . This could have made a difference as he could have provided the insurance. I don't know but how does a modern 30-30 stack up to a black powder 50-70 or 45-70 load of yester year ?
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
