Military knives
« on: August 01, 2008, 03:47:12 PM »
Lately I have been thinking about picking up a military knife. All my knives are sheath knives (hunting) or pocket knives. So I know nothing about the military knives. I was thinking about getting what is being issued currently to the Army or Marines. The problem is I don't know what that is and if you can buy them any where. Any help from anyone here would be great.

There are a goodly number of companies producing what are referred to as military knives.  Blackhawk, Tops, Ontario, Cold Steel,Benchmade, Gerber etc etc.  Your best best is to just Google on Military Knives and take a look at what's offered.

Thanks Joel. I did google military knives which is what prompted the question here. There are quite a lot of manufactures to say the least. Do all these companies make knives for our military, or only a few, or just one ? I would prefer purchasing one from the same manufacturer, but I don't know if that is possible. Does anyone actually know who makes the Army or Marines survival knives.

Try K-Bar. Gotta admit though I'm partial to them.

Ronbow, thanks for the suggestion to look at Kabar knives. That is what I was looking for. In fact I ordered one tonight after looking at them. Thanks again for the heads up.

I bought my Kabar in 2003 and picking one out can get a little interesting.  They have them in all kinds of different steels, different sheaths, partially serrated or plain, different markings, and other differences.  The one I got is the kabar D2 serrated in the nylon sheath with a pouch.  My gerber multiplier fit perfectly in that pouch and it was a good combination to have handy.

Bought a SOG Gov-Tac for a fine young man in the Marines, it looks and feels like a knife I would wont if I were to go in harms way.
