SVI and STI - Sleepers or Keepers?
« on: August 02, 2008, 10:57:49 PM »
I thought that I possessed a farily broad knowledge of 1911 style pistols, but I have very little acquintance with SVI and STI pistols.  How long have they been producing guns and what is the general concenus regarding the quality and innovation that they put forth?  Is it worth while for me to consider giving them a serious look?  Regards,  JHT

I dont know much about svis but i do own a sti. Its a trojan and in my opinion it  may be the best bang for the buck of any midrange priced 1911. It holds up well to comparisons with guns that cost twice as much.

You will find a great number in "games".
I own two STI'S and they are flawless. It cost me less for two STI's than one SVI---NOW, I would love an SVI.
SVI has a number of pantents and, originally, STI was co-owned by the guy who now owns SVI---competition within the business and two different directions.
STI is made in Texas, North of Austin. I have been too the factory--and you can also, just call ahead.
They are both better than any commercial grade 1911 and you can get the Trojan for about $900--they have some other models which go up in price and there can be some amount of customizing.
SVI is a Dallas area based operation and you can drive up and order if you are close by, and, order you must.
Both have great customer support.
If you have read any of Sharon Ann's pieces you will know that their parts are first class.
I would rate them with a number of custom commercials such as knighthawk and Brown.

William, referring to me as a source of authority is gratifying, and embarrassing at the same time. Thank you.

These forums have long been known for some VERY good people who know their stuff--Alas, I am not one of them--just a seeker---and they share good observations and advice.
You are a welcomed newcomer, and, you have set yourself up in high company.
I won't give praise too everbody I respect for fear of forgetting someone.

Hey JHT:  :D

From what information I've gathered, is that STI, Rock Island Armory, and Charles Daly, are partners with Armscor of the Philippines, who supplies all the basic parts for STI, Charles Daly, and Rock Island.    From those parts they produce their own versions.

That is incorrect.
For some models STI does have supplier---they also use American suppliers.
The single action is a foreign supplier--I don't believe the Trojan is, but I can be corrected, I know it too be cast.

Glad you brought that up about the Trojan.  I knew that, but errored to mention the Trojan is American made, whereas the Spartan has Armscor parts.     As for the Charles Daly 1911's, here is an excerpt of a quote from the Company's President.....

Charles Daly 1911's, manufactured by Armscor, use the same internals as RIA, are put together the same as RIA, and use the exact same springs as RIA.

The strong impression that your input leaves is that these are "keepers."  Are there any naysayers?   JHT

Too Fourbee and all I need too offer apology.
I said "That is incorrect." Totally too strong of language. I should have said it in softer tones, which is the way I was thinking.
I didn't and have read and reread the statement and am embarrassed at it.
Please accept my apology.
Blessings

No problem Bill:    As far as JHT's question about the SVI's.   I've heard their guns can get very expensive.   Also, they seem to share the patent on the Polymer type Frames with STI.   Tried to find my STI catalog to see if the Trojan frame was such, but Bill, since you own one, you may shed some light on that.
