mossberg maverick 88 security-SSG pattern?
« on: August 03, 2008, 04:28:54 AM »
I am looking at the short barreled Mossberg Maverick 88 security ,for use as back up on a moose hunt-the area we hunt is on the yukon border riverbank with thick willows ,and a healthy grizzly population.
The other potential use is deer hunting with SSG ,in a''shot guns with shot only-single projectile prohibited''area.I'd also like to try out this new ''tri-ball ''shotshell by dixieslugs
My question-what does the shortbarrelled security model pattern like with SSG?[being aware of the 30-40 yard effective range of SSG]

I don't know about the SSG.  I assume that you mean one of the Security models that has 6 or 8 shot mag?  Either way it is 18-1/2 or 20 cylinder bore.

I have a Maverick 88 that I cut to 20" cylinder bore.  It puts 5 out of 9 of 00 Buck into 12" circle at 25 yards.  That is the farthest that I have tested it with 12".  I used Winchester Low Recoil 00 Buck.

I am guessing that 35-40 yards would be a challenge to get 5 pellets or more.  You should definately look at the Federal 00 Buck loads with "Flite Control" wads.  Supposedly the densest pattern for defense.  Haven't tried them myself.

yah, thats a pretty big pattern at 25 yards-and greatly increases the risk of losing a deer-especially if the distance is a bit more than you estimated
