270 Ultra?
« on: August 03, 2008, 05:08:23 AM »
My local dealer has a used Ultra in .270 on his rack for $220.  This gun looks new and seems to be a good deal with the scope base included.  I have never owned a .270, but where I hunt, there is the occasional possibility of a 200 yd shot at a whitetail which I feel uncomfortable with my old 30-30 topper.  I assume the .270 is an accurate H&R as most are (with a couple of exceptions like the 44 Mag, and lightwt barreled .243's).  Any feedback would be appreciated.  Thanks  44 Man.

I have been a big 270 fan for years , I have 2 of the Handi 270s , one I shoot only 90 grain Varmint bullets in and the other shoots the 130 grain very well .

The 270 H&R is one that you hear very few complaints about , if that tells you anything .  ;)

I'll second Stimpy's opinion, I have had and still have more than one 270 Ultra/Handi, they all shoot well. The last one I shot did great with 150gr partitions handloaded.

Not for 200yds shooting, but don't turn away from the 44mag due to it's bad reputation, current production guns shoot very well, when Marlin started making the barrels that all changed. Everyone that has bought a 2007 or later barrel/rifle has had excellent accuracy, my new acc barrel shoots 1½-2" groups at 100yds with two different factory loads with my old eyes and a peep sight, the Hornady 240gr XTP and the 225gr FTX, others have reported the 240gr shooting very well too.  ;)

Thanks for the info guys.  I need something with a little more reach than my 30-30 and 35 rem.  And I really don't want to set up and reload either for this one.  I have been happy with the factory 30-30 stuff for no more than I shoot, and I think I will just go with factory ammo for the .270 also.  Actually a new pair of eyes would likely help more than than a new caliber, but since that is not a handy solution, I think I will try this rifle.  And Quick, thanks for the info on the PF-9, my local dealer has one now and I'm leaning pretty heavy towards it.  Of course I still have to pay for that Colt Ltwt Commander on layaway.......   44 Man

For factory ammo, my 270 Ultra Handi has always done well with the 130 gr. Remington Express Core-Lokt.
I've never tried it out to 200 yards but I'm confident that it would perform well.
