TC 7-30 Waters W/ Sierra 120gr
« on: August 04, 2008, 02:03:44 PM »
I was given (almost) 200 Sierra 120 gr Spitzers # 1900
Anyone had good luck with them in 15" Contender?

Looking to work up a 200yd Deer load.

If nothing else they should make for some
good range time.

Thanks,
Mike

perfect weight for the 7-30 for use on whitetails..should work just fine.

I have the same pistol.  I use the 130 grain Sierra made for pistols.  I think it is their SSP.  I have used 120 grain Nosler's and they worked as well.  I expect you will have good results with the 120 grain bullets.

I use the 120 also and have had great success with them. I do not remember which brand it was, but one of them is a good bit harder than others. It did not expand very much on a white tail doe . I managed to get a 2nd round into her that stopped her. the 1st round exited with a small hole. 2nd one was a raking shot that broke the off side shoulder/leg. Both rounds hit lungs, but 2nd went thru heart then into shoulder. I do NOT believe it was a Sierra, maybe Speer.?? The gun was a 14" contender in 7-30. I have had good results in the 14" and 21" 7TC/U also with 120's.

I've never used that particular bullet in the 7-30 but I have used several others of that weight and for 120 grain bullets in the 7-30 my preferred powder is AA2520 it seems to give the best combination of velocity and accuracty with 120s. When I discovered the Sierra 130 grain SSP bullet I stopped using 120s. That bullet is now discontinued but I have way more than a life time supply of them on hand so for me that's of no consequence.

I used to load the Hornady 120 SSP and loved very accurate and worked good on deer but then Hornady discontinued it as well. I've used the Nosler 120 BT and the same can be said for it as for the discontinued Hornady bullet it's accurate and works good on deer. It is today my second choice bullet for the 7-30 behind the Sierra 130 SSP. I'm not sure what velocity range the Sierra 120 is made for but it might be a bit hard for the Waters velocity range from a handgun barrel.
