So...which 22LR rimfire you you like best???
« on: August 04, 2008, 02:08:54 PM »
Hi All,

I have ALOT of rifles...all but 2 (a ruger 77/17 in 17HRM and a Win m52 gallery gun in 22short that was my Dads and in poor condition) are centerfires.  I'd like to buy a 22LR but haven't paid much attention to them for years. I'm looking for a gun for target and hunting.  No real preference for auto or bolt.  The rem M597?? looks good and I could just get another 77 in 22.

What do you like and why????

You sure know how to get the juices flowing. This post will probably attract a lot of "opinions". ;D I do not have a lot of guns, but the ones I do have have been changed in some way or another. I think the only ones that have not had some thing done to them is a Remington 552 Speed Master and a SKB 20 gauge double (it is just too sweet to mess with). I have a Ruger 10/22 that has been modified some what that will put 5 CCI mini Mags into .5 or just above at 50 yards. They do throw a flier once in a while out about .2" from the rest making a .5 group a .7 or .75" group. It does not do this all the time, but once in a while. Not bad for high speed ammo on the cheap from Walmart. It will put 5 Lapua Master M into 1 hole about .4" at 50 yards. It is no target rifle, but it will hit any small game in that 50 yard range with out a problem. I do not think it is the best looking rifle around. I am partial to bolt guns and or single shots. I think for the money spent you can not beat a Marlin bolt action what ever. Pick the one you like best. Now let the games begin. ;)

If you like the CZ's, I am in the market for one too, look at the 453.  It is new this year and has a single set trigger.  An auto I would go with the 10/22, there is tons of after market stuff for them, but they shoot good out of the box too.  You did not mention a lever gun, but take a look at the marlin 39A.  The only .22 rifle I currently have is a browning bl-22 and it is a good gun.  I am in the market for all three I listed above and just waiting to find a good deal on one of them.  I think you will do fine with the 77/22 and have looked at a few of them as well just haven't found a deal I couldn't live without on one yet.  One more I would like to hear opinions on is the savage mark II series.  I like the one with the thumb hole stock.  A buddy has on in a 17hmr and it is a great little gun,  I have not seen one yet in anything but .17 so would like to know if they are shooters.

Quite interesting on that Rem with the Shilen barrel...may be worth checking into this more. Seems like the old adage that (if one had $X to spend on a .22, they would save half of it for a good scope) still holds true as most of them seem to be good shooters.
I am sorry to say that I cannot help you out with any new models as I am still stuck on my Rem Nylon 66.

If you want excellent not going to break the bank .22's then look no further than the Marlin Model 60 or the Savage MarkII. Both excellent guns and extremely accurate for a small price. I could never bring myself to pay that much money for a .22 (CZ). I figure if I have that much money burning a hole I will buy a bigger gun.

I have had many .22's. Marlin 60, 25. Couple of Savages. Winchester 250. Remington 66. Several more I can't remember the model numbers on.
My all time favorites are my 39A Marlin and my new Handi.
The Handi is, without any doubt, the most accurate .22 rimfire I have ever fired.

One of the finest mass produced 22's ever made is the Remington 540/580 series rifles.  The 540 series are the favored ones mostly target models, for some hunting and paper the 581 and 582 rifles are very hard to beat.  All bolt action, probably the strongest and stiffest actions on any .22 built, and they shoot great.  I have one stock and one in a 22 Hornet CF conversion.  Take a look, not real cheap, but very nice and they are shooters.  Larry

I like to hunt with the Marlin 39A's. I have a couple Remington bolt guns that are quite accurate for impromtu target shooting. For a "fun gun", I like my Nylon 66's for plinking.

I have an EAA Biathlon Basic that shoots very well, if I was still shooting in the 100 meter prone league I would not hesitate to use it.  It's not as accurate as an Anschutz prone rifle that I had (12 pounds), but not too far off.  A great small game rifle with it's fast action straight pull bolt.  It came with 5 and 10 shot magazines and has a Weaver style scope base instead of the common 3/8" tip-off found on most .22's.

If you have a Contender, the contender Carbine barrels are excellent even in the standard chambering.  I had one, but didn't need it and sold it since I have the EAA.

Hi All,

If you are considering used then the choice is wide and will depend on what is available locally.

However if your considering new then I can think of only three makes really worth considering  ;) the CZ 452 and it's varients in the more budget range and if cost is not problem Anschutz or Cooper  ;D All three with average care will last several lifetimes. I'll admit to not owning any of them right now, had an Anschutz 64 Light model several years ago, the CZ452 I never got as when I went to buy one I found a Brno Model 2 (1965 Vintage) on the rack and brought that instead as it had as straight combed stock and a trigger that breaks like glass and was in almost mint condition and was cheaper than the CZ452.

I am sorry but the Savage rimfires that I have seen left a less than steller impression on me, cannot comment on the Remingtons mentioned only have experience with a Nylon 66 Mohawk and a 513P, the 513P was OK but the Nylon 66 was junk, the Ruger 10/22 can be very varible in accuracy unless it's rebuilt  ??? cannot see the point go that sorry. The Mossbergs are good if their style appeals.

Good luck with your choice  ;D.

Never a better shooter made for the money and never out shot by and never out shot by an Aushitz, Browning, Ruger or Savage. It was only $35 new when my dad bought it for me in 1953, and it will still do single hole at 50 yards if right ammo is used.

The most fun and accurate to be tree rat gitter is the little AR-22 by TacSol sitting on a DPMS AR-15, 20 or 30 round magazines available and just too much fun to shoot and is box stock and beats a friends tricked out 10-22 Ruger.

What do you like and why????

Without a doubt, Anschutz!!  I like my 22's to be light and handy, but with the upmost in accuracy...  Anschutz has all of that in spades...

I have a lot of 22's, but my Anschutz has proven to be my "best buy" since i bought it in the 70's.

I've never seen a 22 rifle I didn't like.  I've only got a half dozen (rifles) now.  Three of them are 10/22's (DSP's) one Remington 597, a Marlin 39A, and a Stevens 46 bolt action.  They all shoot better than I can I know that.  I've also got a Ruger 77/22 on layaway, just waiting for my budget to catch up to my wants.

All of them are good IMHO.

Only one?    I've had a truck load and a half of 22 rimfires over more than 5 decades - many different makes and many, many different models.    Still have a few of them.

Guess the best way I can answer... for about 25 years it would have to be the Winchester galley guns (1890's//1906's) and Steven Favorites.   Then it was a Mossberg 640K Chuckster for maybe a dozen years until I bought my Ruger 77/22 in the mid 80's.    That got me by until in 2001 when I was ruined forever on the 22 rimfires.   Now I only shoot the three 17HM2 and three 17HMR  rimfires I have, and the remaining 22 rimfires are all safe queens.   I did resurrect the Ruger 77/22 though by making it a switch barrel 22/17HM2.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

"Now I only shoot the three 17HM2 and three 17HMR  rimfires I have, and the remaining 22 rimfires are all safe queens..."

After experiencing the advantages of my 17 HMR rifle over my 22's, I can understand how some folks might tend to relegate the lowly 22 LR round to the ash heap of history.

Not me though; a $10 brick of greasy lead-bulleted shells, my old Winchester 62A and a few tin cans will always make for one of my greatest pleasures in life...

I recently bought a new CZ453 "Varmint" (heavy 21" barrel,  no iron sights)  in .22 rimfire with a single set trigger.  It is very particular about the ammunition it's "fed".

I haven't found "THE" ammo it truly "loves" yet although a few different brands/types have shot better than most of the others.  Unfortunately, they were well beyond what I'm willing to pay for 50 rounds of .22 rimfire.

Regular trigger is about 2½ pounds, the set trigger is set at about 6 to 8 ounces.  I could adjust it to be a bit lighter, but I feel that would be too "touchy".  It barely takes a "touch" to fire the rifle as it is.

Now that I have a rifle capable of "one-caliber-sized hole" groups, I'm finding considerable variation in the current .22 rimfire ammo... shot-to-shot out of the same box of ammo.

I believe part of the problem might be that the barrel is not "broken in" yet (only 600 rounds through it), I am finding the more it's shot, the more accurate it is becoming.

Of course, my shooting technique is also getting better with more practice with the single set trigger as well... but I've shot tiny groups before with my heavy barreled Sako in .222 with my handloads using VithaVoure N-130 which shoots 5 shots into .30 caliber sized holes... so I'm no "stranger" to precision shooting.

So far, I haven't found any "cheap" ammo (less than $3.00 a box of 50 rounds) that will consistently shoot less than .75 inches at 50 yards.  A few much more expensive brands of ammo shot less than ½ inch, 5-shot groups at 50 yards, but it is too expensive to shoot that ammo very much at $10 to $20 for a 50 round box.

Incidentally, I'm using a new 4-12x by 40mm scope with an adjustable objective turret (for eliminating parallax).  I doubt that the C453 will outshoot an Anschutz that costs more than 3 times as much, but the Model 452/453 CZ is most certainly a very accurate bolt-action .22 rimfire rifle, but it isn't inexpensive.   :)

I've either owned or shot/handled virtually all the major makes/models of rimfires being produced today. I've come to the conclusion that either you can buy what works or what looks good, but not both. The most accurate .22lr I've ever shot is my H-R Versa Pack. The .410 barrel is a crapshoot but the Microgrooved .22lr barrel is simply wonderfull. It is a joy to shoot and take hunting. The next one on my list would be a Marlin 981T. Also the Marlin 917 .17HMR seems to be a good shooter as well. I've shot several Savage rimfires that were friends rifles. All have shot VERY well. None of these rifles will win any awards in looks and fit/finish but man can they shoot! I've owned 4 CZ's and none ever would be as consistant as the H-R. I've shot one Annie that was amazing but I'd rather have a Marlin or Savage simply because the elcheapos will not be as picky as that Annie was in ammunition selection. I'd say buy yourself a good old US built Marlin or H-R or a Canadian built Savage (rimfires are made up north, centerfires are built here).
