I have lots of rimfire rifles.  I'll make two suggestions if you want something "classy" and accurate.

Semi-Auto:  Belgium Browning take down.

Bolt: Remington 541-S

I have three 10/22's and my favorite rifle to shoot is a CZ 452 LUX with open sights.
It shoots everything from 22 CB longs to target, to the hyper stuff.
The sights are accurate and you can hit gongs out to 200 yards when you adjust the sights to 200.
Great rifle.

First choice is my Mossburg Mod. 46b.  Great shooter.
Second is a Marlin Mod. 60.

Since my last post, I picked up my Ruger 77/22.  This is a top-notch gun.  I got it used , with a Simmons 1027, 2x7x32 scope for a lot less than a new 77/22 alone.

There may be some rifles that are more accurate, but this one is accurate enough for me, shooting 10 shot sub 3/4" groups at the 25 yard sight in range, with Federal Bulk Pack ammo from Wal-Mart.  That's plenty accurate enough for me.  A little testing with different ammo would probably shrink those groups, but I've got thousands of rounds of the WWFBP already.  Working the bolt on this rifle feels and sounds like working a bank vault.  CLICK...CLICK

And it's a sharp looking rifle.

I have always liked them and have had a couple.  I have one in .22 mag now.  I had to work on the trigger a little, but I have to with most guns.  And with a 7722 if you feel the need there are some aftermarket parts (trigger, barrel, etc) that can make them really shoot.  Enjoy!

Rugers are the best Ive got three in 77/22 magnum one in 17HMR and one in 22 Hornet. There is no rimfire built as good as the 77/22s! My 77/22 magnum VMBZ is so accurate shoots well under 1" at 100yds. with no problems.

Is that a ruger crest in the middle of the checkering?
The reciever and the bolt handle look off for a 10/22 are they Volkquartzen?

Your correct about the Ruger crest on the forearm of the stock. The stock and laser engraving are by S&K Stocks, They made one beautiful stock for me as you can see. The Reciever is the Ruger factory unit and the entire action has been reworked by Randy at Connecticut Precision Chambering. The custom Ruger logo bolt handle is made by Superior Tactical Solutions.

Cool.  the scope mount was throwing me off.  It made the gun look boxier ( if that's a word).  but the close up shows alot more detail.
Almost looks too pretty to shoot.

CZ for sure.
I have three of them after owning a few Annies.  Mine all really like the Remington sub-sonic hp ammo and it's dirt cheap.  The Aquila shhots really well in mine also.  I have a 452 heavy barrel, an FS and an American- all in .22 Long Rifle.  On a bad day- they'll all stay on a dime at 50 yds.

I owned and/or shot quite a few different 22 LRs, so I have some definite opinions. Here are the ones I've experienced (that I can remember!  ;) ):

Savage-Anschutz 54 Sporter
Browning SA-22 ATD
Browning A-Bolt Medallion
Cooper Model 57
CZ-452 American
Remington 541-T (HB and Sporter)
Remington 541-S
Sako Finnfire Range, Sporter and Varmint
Kimber of America 82C (Classic, SuperAmerica and SVT)
Kimber of Oregon 82A and 82B (various configurations)
Winchester 72
Marlin 1897-T lever action
Marlin 39A
Stevens Favorite
Ruger 10/22 standard and slightly modified
T/C Benchmark, Classic and Contender[/li][/list]

As you can see, I haven't shot some major makes, like current Savages, Weatherbys, Dakota, Mossberg and many different models of the others.

Of those I've tried, I love them all, but I did come to some conclusions:

Best value: CZ
Most consistent high quality: Anschutz and Sako
Best oldie: Winchester 72
Biggest Disappointment: Cooper 57 (Based on one ownership experience, and maybe I got a lemon?)
Good looks and Good performance: Remington 541 and Browning A-Bolt
My overall favorites: Kimber of Oregon

Neat thing about all of these is that they're still available. Some may be hard to find and some are expensive, but they're all worth the search. Enjoy!

My two favorite 22's are a early contender carbine with a 23 inch match barrel and a really old Marlin model 80. The TC is a real tackdriver and ammo quality is the defining factor in it's accuracy but even some of the cheap stuff still shoots into 1/2 inch at 50 yards. With good ammo this rifle can consistantly hit bullet holes at 50 yards. The marlin has a limit though it will only shoot the "good stuff" into 1/2 inch at fifty. Both can do anything needed of a 22 rifle.

well for a young guy i have owned and shot my fair share of .22s. I was very impressed with the accuracy of my rem. 597 but i was young and wanted to be able to upgrade and accessorize and at the time there weren't many options so i bought a ruger 10/22. the ruger is fun to shoot and there are loads of accessories but with the stock barrel and trigger i have never really been impressed with my guns accuracy. I recently purchased a marlin 981t. This gun shoots wonderfully with federal bulk pack 36gr. hp. The best part is I can fit 18 in the tube magazine and 1 in the pipe and i dont know of any stock rimfires that can do that. My other favorite part is that it will shoot shorts and long rifles with out changing a thing. I shoot the cci cb shorts out of it and have been the undertaker for many texas cotton tails and jack rabbits. Not alot of gun stores around here even know about the 981t but i found one in waco and had it shipped to my local dealer. Couldn't be happier.

My CZ is the tack driver, the 10/22 do well with minor tweaking and are just fun to dump a mag with, the 541s are great, and the Savage Model 30 is a great light carry gun.

As for the 597, plan on changing the hammer (no not the trigger as I understand).

While the 10/22 has been the go-to for decades, there are LOTS of great 22s out there.  Key is finding the ammo it likes.

My CZ LOVES the expensive Eley stuff (hence it is only a competition load) but the 10/22T loves CCI standard velocity pistol ammo - which means I have to resight it in for different velocity ammo.

If I am must plinking, who cares - shooting cans is not the same as scores on paper.

Wow I think I found a new home, lol.  I have 4 10/22s anywhere from almost bone stock to almost fully custom.  I have a rossi pump in stainless that is just fun to shoot.  Picked up a henry lever action that I'm having refinished and have yet to shoot.  A single shot winchester that I picked up for the girls. Browning takedown (made in japan, not belgium).  Have a cheapo marlin tube fed a friend told me to come pick up and I could just have it.  May be forgetting one, but you get the idea.  I have been shooting the 10/22 for a long long time and I am slightly partial.  I have been looking for a 77/22 with a beat up stock and barrel for about 5 years.  Plan to replace the stock and put on a threaded bull barrel on.  Been dying to see how much quieter a can is on a bolt action rather than semi auto.  Good luck with your choice.

I have several 22's and most shoot fine.  two of them never shot well.   the most accurate of my bunch?

Savage Mk II, Marlin 39, and drum roll please.....my daughter's single shot Crickett!  This little bolt will hold its own against the Marlin and Savage out to 50 yds.  And it only weighs 2.5 lbs.  It now goes with me in a backpack every time I am out hunting (centerfire) big game just in case a squirrel or rabbit presents an opportunity.

Other 22's I own that show moderate accuracy are:  stock Ruger 10/22, H&R single shot,

Two that I have never been able to get good accuracy from are:  older Marlin 60, and a Rossi single shot.
I'm just tryin' to keep everything in balance, Woodrow. You do more work than you got to, so it's my obligation to do less. (Gus McCrae)

if money is not a concern ,for a bolt gun get a winchester 52,for a semi a 63 winchester preferably one of the later models with grooved receiver. either will shoot with anything around and appreciate in value. with dad's 47 model 63 i could hit sparrows in the top of a maple of the windmill tower or off the cupola on a three story high barn. squirrels had best be shot in the head so as not to ruin any meat. agreed they are pricey but a real part of american heritage.

From my experience I'd have to recommend a Savage MKII BTVS for a bolt gun and a Ruger 10/22 for an auto. You'll have to do nothing but add a scope to the Savage and the 10/22 get the most basic model and all you do is work over the trigger, Boyds second's laminated stock and add a Green Mountain bull barrel ( go to rimfirecentral.com for the full scoop). I have a full custom 10/22 that will shoot with the best off the shelf target rifles. The Savage will run you around $350 and the Ruger will end up costing around $500. If you like to ticker get a 10/22 project, if not get the Savage. Just my humble opinion.

For the Savage look at this:

For the 10/22 look at this but watch your wallet

Like many of you, I've had a pile over the years.  I've settled on two - a bolt action and a pump. They're here.

http://www.303british.com/id60.html

If you haven't found exactly what you want, you'll just have to keep trying different ones until the right one(s) come along.  That's the fun of most rimfires.  They're cheaper to buy and feed for the most part.

My mossberg 144LS. $200 for a nice shape .22lr that will keep them inside .3 at 25 yards with open sights, and under 1/2 at 50 again with open sights. Thats shooting dynapoints, would probably do better with Wolf MT, but I dont have enough left for a serious test.

second would be my 10/22 with GM barrel has shot a .3 at 50 yards with wolf MT...shes gonna wear a new ER shaw barrel soon, hope it shoots as good. Lots of barrel droop issues with the GM barrel, might keep it though, never know when ill pick up another 10/22 ;)

My you guys sure have some nice .22s.  My fav is my boyhood .22 which is a Remington Mod 514 single shot bolt.  Lousy sights, weird trigger but she shoots tight shot groups and has worked flawlessly for over 50 years.

I went to the range yesterday to sight in a new gun that just ticked me off.  So I grabbed the old .22, threw a bunch of pop cans around 50yds, and made my day better.  Once again I fell in love with the ol girl.   ;D
