I recently bought a new CZ453 "Varmint" (heavy 21" barrel, no iron sights) in .22 rimfire with a single set trigger. It is very
particular about the ammunition it's "fed".
I haven't found "
THE" ammo it truly "loves" yet although a few different brands/types have shot better than most of the others. Unfortunately, they were well beyond what I'm willing to pay for 50 rounds of .22 rimfire.
Regular trigger is about 2½ pounds, the set trigger is set at about 6 to 8 ounces. I could adjust it to be a bit lighter, but I feel that would be too "touchy". It barely takes a "touch" to fire the rifle as it is.
Now that I have a rifle capable of "one-caliber-sized hole" groups, I'm finding considerable variation in the current .22 rimfire ammo... shot-to-shot out of the same box of ammo.
I believe part of the problem might be that the barrel is not "broken in" yet (only 600 rounds through it), I am finding the more it's shot, the more accurate it is becoming.
Of course, my shooting technique is also getting better with more practice with the single set trigger as well... but I've shot tiny groups before with my heavy barreled Sako in .222 with my handloads using VithaVoure N-130 which shoots 5 shots into .30 caliber sized holes... so I'm no "stranger" to precision shooting.
So far, I haven't found any "cheap" ammo (less than $3.00 a box of 50 rounds) that will consistently shoot
less than .75 inches at 50 yards. A few much more expensive brands of ammo shot less than ½ inch, 5-shot groups at 50 yards, but it is too expensive to shoot that ammo very much at $10 to $20 for a 50 round box.
Incidentally, I'm using a new 4-12x by 40mm scope with an adjustable objective turret (for eliminating parallax). I doubt that the C453 will outshoot an Anschutz that costs more than 3 times as much, but the Model 452/453 CZ is most certainly a very accurate bolt-action .22 rimfire rifle, but it
isn't inexpensive.
