Canoes?

Looking to get a canoe, What is your favorite aluminum or fiberglass? Also what length do you like?

 Fiberglass is much to heavy. Mike and I use his aluminum ,which is 15 or 16 feet--I think. I have a coleman scanoe which is 15 1/2 feet long.

Thanks Tom, That's what I thought. I used a friends 12' Aluminum, could carry it all day. looking for used one and finding more fiberglass than aluminum.

Tom, do use a motor with you scanoe. If so how does it work?

I had a scanoe that I used with a 6 hp Johnson. It was a pretty good combination. I made a long gas line so I could put the tank in the front to help the balance. In Alaska the natives drag their canoes from lake to lake. They are tiny homemade jobs made out of fiberglass. The plastic scanoe could stand this kind of abuse a lot better than aluminum. Unless you are talking about really small water don't get too small a motor. With any wind at all a canoe can become unmanageble with the little 2 hp class motors. Also a reverse gear is nice rather than spinning the motor 360 degrees like the little fellows. Doing that can tip you over real quick.

bilmac is oh so right.Used a small motor on my scanoe ,while fishing.Got caught in a storm and had to go where the waves took me,ended up a long ways from the landing, and had everyone out at the campgrounds, searching for me.
 When trapping,I have never used a motor on a canoe.

if do you used a small motor. Where a life jacket all the time, i usally dont where one but  i will always with motor on conoe. i tested out my small game fisher 1.75hp on small river near house and man it was tipy. i plan on using it this fall but have to get used to motor on conoe.

I was trying to start one of those tiny motors on a canoe one day. It was being stubborn. I had it turned 90 degrees to the canoe because it was easier to reach the throttle or something. Well it started all of a sudden, no nutral gear on it, and rolled the boat in an instant.

  that sucked, easy to do too. that why i made sure i got one with neutral gear. automatic drive help a lot with my little motor. if you get something stuck in prop the clutch kills the motor with out hurting the prop and motor

About the ultimate small boat for the sportsman is the Grumman sportsman. I'm pretty sure they took their huge old freighter canoe and chopped it off somewhere near the middle. This results in a much wider transome than a typical square stern canoe, so it doesn't squat so much when you and a motor are all in the stern. Disadvantages, They are expensive, and it still may be heavier than what you want. Just like guns, you have to decide what you need it to do and then make the compromises to get as close to your ideal as possible.

four coil, I have run a water line out of a canoe for alot of years. Started with a paddle, had a 2 h.p. side mount for awhile. I now use a square stern with a 5 h.p. motor. My line is over 18 miles long, and few people in between. Keep your motor well tuned, and a cell phone handy for a line this long. I have only had a few proplems over the years. Nothing that a paddle wouldn't get you through. I have spent a unscheduled night on the river before. I use a 17 ft' fiberglass canoe that has been converted to a square stern, which is not hard to do. Never been wet in this rig.

Bog, Yesser'!  As the years pass. My 18 ft. center console War Eagle seems to work very well.   With the price of gas now, the canoe will most likely be used this season.  R Jones

I finally found a canoe! I will hopefully pick it up this weekend. Hope it floats. It's a 13' Browning aluminum.
