Rifle caliber recoil

Folks,

If I can handle medium-strength 454 Casull loads in a 12" Encore handgun, how much worse would a .308 or 30/06 be in a 15" barrel?  I reload.  Thanks

I will tell you full power loads with H-110 powder in my 12" T/C Encore 454 Casull are very manageable, but more severe then my 10" & 15" 7mm-08 Remington barrel with full loads with IMR-4064 and 140 grain bullets.

I would suggest the 308 Winchester, because in the short barrel, there isn't any measurable difference between the 308 Winchester and 30-06 Springfield, plus you can use less powder with the same results.

I shoot an Encore 308.  I find that the recoil is very managable, even with some fairly stiff factory loads.  I wouldn't swear to it, but I believe the 480 Ruger kicks harder.

I'd rather shoot the Encore pistol all afternoon than shoulder a rifle for the same number of shots!  If you load you own, you can certainly load it down for target practice.

I hunted with a 15" Encore last year chambered in .284 Winchester. 140gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips at 2665 FPS pushed by H-4831SC were not bothersome to shoot at all. Yes it recoils, but is very managable. The calculations show this load at 22 FtLbs of Recoil. Full House .454 Casull loads calculate out to about 30 FtLbs of Recoil according to the formula I have. Since the .284 & .30-06 have roughly the same powder capacities I would think the recoil would be similar, with the .308 producing a little less recoil.

My 500 Mag, 454 Casull, 480 Ruger and 510 GNR pistol Encore barrels, have a lot more felt recoil then my 30-06 or 308 Encore pistol barrels.

Just for my "knoweldge bank" (if I actually have one) what would you guys say the effective killing range of a .308 handgun is for whitetail deer? I've been using a 200 yard limit for the 7-30 Waters, but I haven't had any shots at deer when I've had this gun with me. (I mostly take my 44 Smith revolvers.....then I'll get moody and take my Marlin 45-70 with peep sights....then finally the 7-30....if i have any tags left).

The range depends more on your ability to keep tight groups at the distance you want to shoot, within the ballistic limits of the caliber.  I've taken deer at 100+ yds with the 30-30 in 14"barrel.  It's sighted in at 150yds and I'm still on the pie plate at 200yds with 2" groups.  These are developed handloads and I won't go much over 150yds and I use a rangefinder to verify my range on long shots.  The 308 should easily get 200 yds if you do your part; right bullet, correct placement.  Remember though that extreme distance increases the chance of a wounded animal.  I usually keep my shots under 100 yds. unless all conditions are ideal and there isn't a chance for a closer shot.

My .270 Encore pistol was more than I wanted to shoot very much. A very "sharp" recoil versus the .454 Casull, which never really bothered me.
My .243 Encore pistol was an absolute dream, sweet shooting little gun. Really regret getting rid of it.

I'm a new pistol shooter and my 7mm-08 jumps off the rest, but is not painful.  I have Pachmyer grips on it and it is much more pleasant to shoot than my old .357 revolver.  Last session, I shot up 50 rnds of hot 140 gr reloads before i knew it and wanted more.  It did spin the scope in the mounts a bit.    Sure does flatten the grass in front of the bench though.
