I'm curious.  Do you lube your patches, if so, with what and why?

Greetings Castaway

Yes I lube my patches after they are dried.  I use the same lube as my grease cookie to give a bit of lube for seating down with.  After I make sure that no dust or dirt come in contact with the finished product  8)

I forgot to mention the lube... 50/50 mix of Beeswax and Neetsfoot Oil  :D

I wipe 'em down with SPG. Be careful to not "unwind" 'em.

Castaway,
All of my shooting is with smokeless powder. I lube all of my bullets.
I'm still experimenting with the lube, but my best effort,so far is with 2 applications of Lee Alox.
I apply the lube by putting it onto a felt pad,and then rolling the bullet through the lube and beyond. In that way,I assure that a even application is placed onto the bullet. It is labor intensive, though.

I've been shooting nothing but PPB's through my Sharps Buffalo for the last 4 yrs. My latest favorite load is a 45-75-420 cartridge - good all around load. I load with Swiss powder, so I feel comfortable at the rams with this load too.
To get back on subject; I lube my bullets with a piece of chamois lightly "soiled" with powdered graphite, as per Frank Mayer's Dec 1934 article in American Rifleman. I've tried sperm oil and SPG, but they only worked for me if done immediately before firing. Otherwise, the lube migrates thru the patch and accuracy becomes a sometimes thing. Try the graphite; I've shot two-year old rounds with no loss in accuracy, and I believe the graphite helps the bullet into the rifling without tearing the patch.

I have scanned copies of the articlle mentioned; PM me here and I'll send them along.
we've all got it coming, kid.........
