Homemade Conical Lub
« on: August 07, 2008, 06:46:16 PM »
Yep, go back to Crisco.  You could do a lot worse.

I use either Crisco, or my home made lube mixture of 25% bees wax, 25% Crisco, and 50% olive oil.  Put the three ingredients in a glass bowl in the microwave until everything just turns to liquid.  Then stir it a little and pour it into a container of your choice to cool and firm up.  I use old bullet boxes for shooting at the bench and a musket cap tin for woods walking.  This mixture is a little firmer than straight Crisco.  You can vary the amount of olive oil to make a harder or softer lube.

Thanks to Semisane.

I have been using my BP cart. lube (one part bee's wax , three parts lard) with lanolin added to soften it (one part lanolin and three parts "home made lube") I have enjoyed good shooting and no hard fouling problems. It may be too hard for cold weather however, I will find out as the weather cools down.

I've been using Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula, skin creme,  as a patch lube and conical lube. It comes in a 3.5 ounce jar  for about $5 and is just the right consistency for both uses. I also use it to swab the bore between shots, cleans out black and pyrodex residue pretty well.

"mcgiiver", I checked out the Palmers website and they have like 50 or more Cocoa butter products. Can you narrow it down whats exactly on the jar. Thank you. I'm really interested in trying this stuff out. Thanks again,

I think you have found it. The 3.5 oz jar is 4th from left in front of the tube. The two jars I have say on them : Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula, with Vitamin E, Heals & Softens Rough Dry Skin, smooths marks and scars. Bar code number is 10181 04000. In the list on the web site it is: Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula Jar.

I think my guns might like it better if I treated them to Palmers Bottom Butter, or Bust Firming Cream.
