I want your advice
« on: August 09, 2008, 03:33:35 PM »
I am going this week to order a thumbhole stocked Ultra Varmint.
I plan on using it primarily for target shooting out to 300 yards.

The website lists the 223, 243, and 22-250 in this model.

I have a 223 bull barrel now.
I have had a 243 in the past.
I have never touched a 22-250.

I am having a tough time deciding which caliber to get.

I am asking for advice from you guys as to pro's and con's of each.
What would your personal picks be?  And why?

Since you already have a .223, I'd get a .22-250.  The .243 is very problematic in the Handi.

I'd go with the .22-250. Your ego will love it. I had an old M98 action I screwed an E R Shaw barrel into in .22-250, and had a ball with that rifle.
One of the most accurate cartridges around.

Get a 22-250 to play with, they will launch a light bullet near light speed.  Larry

Buy either one and then send the reciever in and get more barrels fitted. You can't go wrong any way you choose

I think the .22-250 will reach out a bit more, and seems to buck the wind better.  If you want to shoot 300, I'd go for the 250.  I love mine.  Pete

Thanks for the advice guys.
Sounds like the 22-250 is the way to go.

It goes without saying, that all barrels don't perform alike, but the E R Shaw barrel I had didn't seem to care what I put in it.
This was one of the first cartridges I ever reloaded, and some of my combinations weren't all that good.
The rifle still shot accurately, and I learned a great deal about pressure, and velocity's effect on group size.
I guess what I'm getting at is the .22-250 is a very forgiving cartridge that can be lots of fun to experiment with.
