Re the post inregards of arrowed bears not going as far as those shot with a firearm.
Could it be that the bear isn't as spooked when hit by an arrow.

Shot this 300+ Lb black bear with my 45/70 Handi this weekend.  My handload is a 300 grain Barnes X running about 2400 FPS.  It did real well.

Blood trail is a good thing, and bear hide makes it difficult to follow. Bigger hole bigger trail. I'm a loyal fan of the Marlin 444. Fish and Game studies found that caliber more effective than the 45-70 AND 300Win mag in stopping grizzlies.

I killed a nice bear in Manitoba last week. Used a browning blr in .358 .250 grn handloads. As a matter of fact I've killed 19 bears with the .358 win all DRT. About all you get is one good shot over bait so even a single shot will do.

I shot black bears this year and last year with cheap Foster slugs out of my 12 gauge Winchester 1300. Over bait, that's all you need.

Neither bear was particularly large - in fact, they were both small - but the holes the slugs left would have killed a moose just as easily.

One nice thing about shotguns - if you have to track a bear, especially after dark, it's a lot handier than a scoped rifle.

This is the kind of debait that can go on and on.  The solution is simple.  The one cartridge all others are judged by.  The venerable ole 30-06. 

But of the three listed in the original post the .338 is over kill.  The .444 Marlin, Dad shot that cartridge for years, and I carried his rifle on many a hunt.  Killed a few Whitetail with it too.  I just never seemed to develop a liking for it.  The .35 Whelen would be my choice for your application ot the three you mentioned.  It's a 30-06 blown out to .35 caliber. 

I have two .35 Whelens and love them.  I should say I have one, the wife commendeered one for her own use.  I can load it light enough for kids to use plinking, or I can load it heavy to take Grizzlies.  Very versatile.
