scopes
« on: August 10, 2008, 03:23:02 AM »
I broke a Bushnell scope last year by dropping the gun.  When I sent it in for repair, they didn't have any parts, so returned a Sportsview (3-9x32  .  I put it on my 25-06, and couldn't get it to group.  I had an older Sportsman, so put it on, and got decently (for hot windy days) sighted.  Now I have that monstrosity they sent me.  My biggest gripe is the gigantic power ring and ocular.  If I use it, I will need high rings, and IMHO, the whole thing is out of scale.  I wnt looking, and lots of scopes in the moderate to low prices seem to have this same problem, plastic power rings instead of smaller aluminum.

There is a gunshow, but I don't know if it is worth the $7 to get in to see what they may have on a table, and then no practical recourse of taking something used back.

I am thinking of biting the bullet and going to a straight 4x and be done with it.

Anyone have any words about Simmons?  I have already completely ruled out Tasco.  There is also Barska, and sometimes I run across leftovers on the back counters of stores.
just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not watching you

I've owned a lot of cheap scopes over the years and some were OK but it is a crap shoot, I can't say that one brand of cheap scope is better than the others. I think your idea of a fixed 4X is the best way to go, especially in the lower price ranges, as there is just much less to go wrong with a fixed power and 4X is plenty for all but long range varmint shooting. I find that with variables I generally choose one power setting and leave it there so why am I paying for a variable with it's weakness and complexity? Because there are very few fixed power scopes available today.

I've got several of the new Simmons, like them better than several other brands.  The smaller ocular is a plus as well.  I own Ziess, Nikon, Leupold Vari X III, Weaver, Swift, Tasco, Sightron II and some others as well.  For the price, Simmons is a good scope.  As of yet, I've had no problems with them. :)  DP

I bought one of there new models last year for a 22 Marlin.  Its nice enough, its repeatable and better than some of the older ones I have had.

For the price I think Bushnell, Nikon or Pentax makes a better scope for about the same money. Also even thou its more dollars, watch for used Leupold's. Not the rifleman, as its not covered be the same warranties. but the VX series or the fixed M8's. they are covered by a lifetime warranty. Send it back in and have it checked out. Only costs you postage and you will have a really good scope you know is perfect for less coin.

The only Bushnell i never recomend for a Handi is the Trophy line. not cause there is ANYTHING wrong wit it. cause there is NOT, its just built with grossly over-sized power ring and necessitates mounting the scope even higher then the damn hammer requires.

Good luck,

I have a Brown, made by Mueller, 4x16 that is as bright and clear as any scope i have picked up.
Mueller used to advertise here. i paid $140.00 for mine, from Brown only because Mueller had just
made the for Brown and were on sale.

I have a BSA 6-24X40 w/Illuminated reticle by BSA on my Ultra Varmint 2 .223 (under $60 at Sportsmans Guide).

I went out again this past weekend and produced my first 3-shot keyhole (sub 1/4-inch @ 100yds) with this gun. Not a bad scope at all, especially for the price. I also have several BSA Scopes, Sweet 243, Sweet 17 and a Sweet 22...no issues with any of them.
