handy handi
« on: August 10, 2008, 04:28:20 AM »
One of the comments posted is that Handi's are getting pricier, and losing their advantage over bolts.  One thing overlooked is that a short rifle (no bolt) in a variety of calibers is handy to carry and use.  Some of us want things like a .35 Whelen, our other options are bolts, or Remington pumps.  Price aside, at least in my part, the other thing I want is the short gun.  The other short gun I can think of is the '94, and 336.  Probably the handy size is what kept them going for so long.

BTW, Remington bought Marlin, so I don't think they sold solely because of dwindling market.  Probably want to retire, and don't want to appoint lackys to run the company.

The Handi is getting more expensive. I was looking at 350-400$ Ultra rifles at a local gunshop. IMO the market share is entry level hunters and shooters. If this trend keeps up the company is in trouble. There are a lot of 250-350$ bolt guns to compete with.Once again IMO the hard core on the website myself included cannot make up for market share. I'm sure this is what drives barrel options etc. This economy as global as it is has ruined a lot of companys. We need to buy products that we believe in not soley based on price.I wonder if its HR or retail driving the price bump. Nef shotguns went from 100 at WM to 117 in the last couple of months. There pump guns for 150-200 Makes you wonder about where this is gonna lead.

Local shops don't usually have the best prices on guns, shop around a little and you can still get Ultras for well under $300, Handis for $250 or less, the prices listed below include shipping.  ;) Sportsman's Warehouse still sells Handis for less than $250, but they also sell the new Marlin XL7 for $290, if I was in the market for a cheap bolt, it would be the one to check out, adjustable trigger to 2½lbs, similar in appearance to the Accutrigger, nice safety and very light, there's a review in the current Outdoor Life, 5-shot 100yd groups with factory ammo varied from .8" to 2¼",  I handled one at SW earlier this week, not a bad handling rifle at all.

I just like singleshot rifles. I like the shortness or the extra barrel length for any given overall length. I like the fact that I can load rounds that would never feed from a magazine. I like being able to silently load or unload and switch ammo with ease. I like being able to look through the bore at a glance. I like the flatness, with no projecting knobs, levers or thingies. I like exposed hammers. I still love my M-70 featherweight in 6.5x55 and my double shotguns but all else are singleshots, either breech or muzzle loading. ;D

I own a handi for a few reasons.

1.  It was the caliber I wanted for deer hunting (.44 mag).

2.  It's pretty accurate.

3.  There have been millions sold (so they must be doing something right).

4.  I don't mind if it gets a little beaten up in the woods (because of reason 5).

5.  It didn't cost a fortune ($219.00 new).

6.  If it sits in the gun safe and only gets used a few times a year, I don't feel like I wasted a bunch of money on an unused toy.  I'm too cheap, err.....practical to buy expensive guns to shoot once a year.  I just won't do it.

I was just curious.  What distance are you shooting, and what kind of deer are you hunting to need a .300 Win Mag.  Seems to me the .308 would do it all.......out to as far as one can see.

I think now would be the time to approach them about selling unchambered barrels.  They could fit them to the frame and every thing, just not cut the chamber, they could even cut an ejector notch in them.  Larry

I own around fifty long guns, haven't counted lately.  But the one that always goes with me is the Handi 30-06.  Just got back this morning from a three day Caribou hunting trip.  Norm and I brought back two Caribou, one apiece.  Handi accounted for both.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Anyone here ordered a gun from Bud's?  Do you owe the receiving FFL anything over the price on the site?

Recieving dealers charge varying amounts to transfer firearms, $10 to over $100, depending on how much they want to charge, some include sales tax if applicable, Bud's has excellent prices and service, I bought my SS 45-70 from him about a month ago. You can find an FFL transfer dealer at the links below, contact them and make arrangements and confirm their fee, those listed may not be current.

I was looking at the $198 .270 they had. I may have to call the guy that got me my BC...the total on it from him was $340.  He's not on their list, but the say you can add one by faxing a copy of the FFL.
