Jason, I have the standard 22" barrel with a wood stock.  I put a synthetic on my '06 and loaded 36 ounces of lead in the stock and it turned the recoil with 180 gr. loads down to about the same as my grandkid's Red Ryder.  I'm going to do the same with the .45-70, change to synthetic, load the stock with lead and go.

I like stainless, but for the extra money, I'll stick with blue and some lead in the stock.

I shoot Hornady LE 325 gr. and they really don't bother me, and I'm just a skinny little 67 year old kid.

Trigger jobs can be done yourself if you're the DIY type, complete instructions can be found in the FAQs and Help sticky. H&R at Gardner used to do free trigger jobs, but since the move to Ilion, Remington may no longer be doing them, that remains to be seen. Any competent gunsmith can do them too.

The standard wood and Ultra stocks have a bolt hole drilled thru them to access the stock bolt, it makes a great place to add weight or a mercury recoil reducer,  the synthetic stock are hollow so they can be weighted too. The SS Ultra 45-70 thumbhole has no hole, but most folks find they help reduce felt recoil just by their design. The bigger issue with the 45-70 Ultra is the thin recoil pad that comes on it, I swapped mine out for a camo t-hole stock with a Decelarator pad, that can be done with any stock, Limbsaver makes some fantastic pads that will bolt on a lot of H&R stocks, both syn and wood/lam, see the FAQs for info on that.

The value of the SS Ultra 45-70 is just a matter of personal preference, I bought one just cuz I wanted it, it's the first all stainless H&R ever made, I'll be shooting handloaded 300gr Barnes TSX-FBs thru it using Barnes' data this Wednesday, watch for my range report.  ;)

Well sounds okay seems like since I am left handed I would have to replace the stock on the Ultra hunter anyhow so maybe I will just ponder on this far a while.

Yes, being a lefty makes the t-hole stock out of the question since it's only available in right hand. But all H&R butt stocks fit all frames, so if you want the stainless frame and barrel, you can always sell/trade the stock for what you want.  ;)

If you stick with reasonable loads the recoil isn't an issue.  The 405 grain Remington factory load will whack anything in this hemisphere and has no recoil.  I prefer it over all others for accuracy and fun shooting.  I really like the shorter barrel of the standard Handi.
