Opinions Please- small project
« on: August 11, 2008, 03:40:23 PM »
I had posted about a stevens 54A .410 and no one seemed to know anything about it so i figured i would show mine and ask opionions about my refinishing job.  The stock was in great shape minus the discolorations here and there.  The barrel had some rust but the bore was amazingly shiny.  So let me know what you think and how do you think it will do during squirrel season.  Any advice? its chambered for 2 1/2 and 3 inch shells.  Im currently shooting 2 1/2 no. 6's

By the way this is about my 4th gun and since they havent been anything i would want to sit on the shelf for a show piece, but more for hunting, so i expect scratches and marks, they have been cold blued and on this one the end of the stock has been painted with a charcoal color, stained with a light coat of ipswick pine i believe it was and 2 coats of clear.

looks great.

How far did you break the gun down to refinish it?

there really isnt much to this old gun.  i of course had the stock off.  i didnt take the bolt apart.  and the barrel assembly really isnt anything but the barrel with a trigger blade threw it but the pin holding it in was too hard to get out and i didnt want to chance breaking it so i left it alone

From the pictures it looks good.

In refurbishing an old firearm, the sky is the limit on just how far one wants to go.  Touching up blemishes on the metal and keeping it oiled will probably be sufficient for a working shotgun.  A wood stock will require a finish that keeps it sealed.  Moisture is not good for wood.  As long as you used a good sealer, you should be OK.

One place I've seen that gets neglected is under the butt plate.  Be sure to seal that area well.

That ole' bolt action should do well and be fun at the same time.  I still make it a point to take the bolt shotguns out at least a couple times each squirrel season.

Congratulations and have fun!   ;)

i dont like to touch up areas i like to start from scratch.  This one along with the others i have done where taken down to bare metal and reblued.  As for the stock. i hope it is sealed good.  I dont remember the brand but i used a spray on triple thick clear coat and applied 2 coats and i did hit under the buttplate.  However my guns dont see much moisture and if i do go out on a nasty day..i bring my air rifle or my synthetic stock savage 17hmr as i mainly squirrel hunt.
I like the bolt action shotguns and actually both of my shotguns are bolt action.  I have a mossberg 195 12 gauge with the c-lect chock but that one has a 2 shot clip.  This stevens is a single shot.
