Bear Bomb. What are you opinions?
« on: August 12, 2008, 11:36:33 AM »
I would like to ask the people using this forum as to their opinion on the Bear Bomb. I have read a number of things about it but I wonder how many people here have used it for black bear hunting. If so, what are your experiences? Thanks for any replies.

Another good source to look for product reviews is cabelas website, and midway's website and others websites.  Most websites are going to where there are reviews for every product they sell.  I also like to ask people here though too.  I've never used it, but I've read good things.

I don't know much about the bear bomb but I did use a 'scent ball' from bearscents.com last Fall. It is a hard bowling ball sized ball of scented material. The idea is to hang it out of reach near your bait pile. I could smell it very well from the stand a ways away. One lasted all Fall as it slowly shrunk in size, the 2nd(2 different piles) was carted off by the bears since I didn't have a real good way to hang it out of reach.

You would be better off using anise or liquid smoke than the bomb.  It has a bacon smell, but it does not and won't stay around like the sprays will.  Tried them both; I wont use the bomb again.

:) Howdy! I tried the hickory bacon bear bomb last year hunting in Northern Arkansas. It did not do anything for me or for bringing in bears. I am not sure which one of the others I would try.  If the bear has never experienced beaver castor or anise oil, it might be reluctant to come to the bait site.  The outfitter usually puts down bread and pastries or donuts for bait. If anyone has any better suggestions, I would appreciate hearing from you as I plan to go back to Arkansas hunting again this Fall.  Thanks!!

Happy Trails!

JMHO but I don't believe the human odor bothers bears that much. I also believe a good cigar or pipe covers scent fairly well and most all critters smell stuff burning all the time.Where baiting is allowed or other types of hunting take place bears know our smell and free food is often involved. If odor was a big problem the camp sites would not be visited by bears so much.Until you have shared a salmon stream with feeding brownies who don't give a flip what you smell like its hard to understand the smell thing.
