150 gr 45-70 collarbuttons
« on: August 12, 2008, 12:50:06 PM »
Western bullets sells these, anybody got load data?  Particularly interested in BP loads, but would like to hear smokeless too if anyone has them.  My Lyman Reloading Manual (49th) and my Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook (3rd) don't have data, even though it is a Lyman mould bullet.

They removed the data when Western's site was updated, I printed the data out when I got the bullets, but I've never played with them. Powders listed are Bullseye, Red Dot, 700X, Unique, SR4759, XMP5744, IMR4227 and IMR4198, pick your poison and I'll post the data. This data was supplied with the mould in 1999 according to the page.

Only one of those I have on hand is IMR4198, and getting smokless here in Eastern NC turns out to be REALLY pricy.  Can only get anything that ain't Hogdon's by mail order (ever see the shipping and hazmat fees?).

IMR4198 is 35gr start @ 1722fps, 40gr Max @ 2010fps, Rem 9½ primer, no barrel length or COL is listed. I probably wouldn't reload if I had to buy powder online, we have lots of smokeless powder and primer sources locally fortunately, so I can sympathize.  :'(

Thnaks for the load data.

Problem is I'm dead between Camp Lejeune and Havelock MCAS. All the MArines here can get powder on base...so the off base stores don't carry much. Think I can get the Hogdon because Walmart and Dick's get it with shipments of Pyrodex and Triple-7.

That data doesn't have the BC for them in it does it? I know its gotta be like .1 something (or less) but I'd be curious.

Figure these are 100 yard or less rabbit killers, which would be interesting in my BC since Deer and rabbit season overlap here.  Figure if I knock down a deer in the morning I can rabbit hunt the rest of the day with only one gun.

With Unique you'd need filler unless you enjoy hangfires.

And I think even more so with the slower powders listed. I've had good luck with short .45 caliber pistol bullets as small game and plinking loads from .45/70 rilfes.

XMP5744 is on the data sheet, I use it in the 45-120, never have a problem with it without fillers with well under 50% load density. For the 45-70 w/collar button 30gr start @1685fps, 35gr MAX @ 2001fps.
