How many HP owners feel they are junk?
« on: August 13, 2008, 02:23:53 PM »
Im sure this thread will be delete ASAP (because there is only one opinion allowed here)but I know there are quite a few of us who have a negative opinion of these cheap knockoffs.I had one start firing when the slide dropped,2 weeks old, bought brand new and less than 150 rounds fired.Anyone else find them as repulsive as i do?I found many reports from gun store owners and gun writers reporting hipoints that exploded, misfired, ect ect and all of them were deleted, why? Why a pm telling me you will delete all my posts here?

Here is the pm I got today, guess he cant handle anyone sharing evidence that his beloved hijunks are dangerous, poorly made and unreliable, this has been a constant in this forum dedicated to these worthless throw away midnight special handguns.I owned a HP and its the only firearm I have ever owned that misfired,a very dangerous misfire where it went off when you drop the slide, one that is quite common when you do some research.
If it aint fair chase its FOUL,and illegal in my state!

I happen to like them , granted their butt ugly and they do have problems from time to time , 2 things they do have going for them are the fact that if something is wrong IT WILL BE FIXED and they can shoot .

The only real problems that I have heard of are when aftermarket mags and stocks ( carbine model ) are used . Their warranty is as good or better as any in the industry , as with any mass produced product you are bound to get a bad apple but that does not mean that they are all junk .

This is just my take on them and your oppion may be very diffrent .

I have a friend who has owned both Smith & Wesson and High Point in the last year. He sold the S&W's and kept the High Point. Bought a High Point carbine to go with his pistol.
I have shot both and really like the carbine. Would own one if I was into that kinda gun.

I am not an owner nor will I ever be. A good friend has a HP handgun and a carbine. \
Neither feel good or even close to natural in my hands and neither have been able to shoot 3 full magazines in a row!
Life is too short to own or try to improve the two HP guns he owns

Some  people seem to like them. If that's all someone can afford, then by all means, buy em!! For my money there are so many better options out there.

Not junk in my opinion. I bought one, a C9, just to see how good or bad they were. It's shot a bunch of ammo and never failed to fire. Even runs the cheap Monarch steel cased stuff that stovepipes in my PT92. It is surprisingly accurate, not anything to compare with my Colt Gold Cup but I can keep them all in an 8" circle at 15-18 yards offhand with my shaky hands and progressive bifocals. One of these days I'm going to shoot it off a rest just to see what it will do. It's ugly but so is a Glock. The grips are slick and the trigger is heavy but I stippled the grips and tweaked the trigger to where it is pretty good.

Is it a fine, high quality firearm? Nope. I figured if it wasn't to hot I wasn't out much money and if it was OK I had a truck gun and that is just what I use it for.

If you don't like Hi Point firearms for whatever reasons,  that's fine.  Post your comments.  Tell us about your personal experiences with these weapons.  But,  and I stress,  But,,  don't attack others who own and like them because they don't agree with you.

I own a .45 HP and have never had any problems with it. My son shot mine a few times and decided to buy one for himself. He shot maybe 3 boxes of ammo through it with no problems. He took it out last month and shot it a few times and had a jam which he cleared. After clearing the jam he shot 2 more rounds and on the 3rd round he said it blew the entire gun apart. He said he was standing there with only the grip in his hand.
Don't know what happened, he was shooting a new box of Winchester ammo which he had used before with no problem. Sent it back to Hi Point and they did replace it free of charge. Have to admit though I'll probably be a little leery next time I shoot mine.

Nonya,
Let's see.  I guess I can best describe the High Point handguns as:  Cheap home protection or a starter gun.  Do you remember the Liberator pistol that the OSS made to drop all over occupied Europe in WWII.  Think of the HP as one of those.  It will work long enough for you to get a better gun.  They were not designed to be shot a lot and they came with 10 rounds in the grip and had to be single loaded.  After not more than the 10 rounds they generally did not work.  The HP is the modern version of that gun.  It will work for the amount of ammo it has in the mag and a little more to give you a secure feeling of having a gun in the house or on your person.   Not much more than that.  But I would rather have a new HP in my hand than a baseball bat if someone broke in.
Go back to the gun store and look at all the different handguns they have.  Pick a price point that will allow you to get the gun a couple of extra mags and some ammo to break the gun in.  even used guns are not always shot and you need to put about 150 rounds through it to see how it functions and get used to it.  Then see how they feel work through the opperations of the handgun and this may sound really stupid but it works.  Take the hand gun and hold it in the low ready,Both hands on the gun, pick a point on the wall at the counter and close your eyes.  Yes close your eyes! and bring the hand gun up to the point on the wall.  No open your eyes.  You should be looking down the sights and on or near the point.  If you are the gun fits you and your grip.  If you are looking at the top of the slide  and see the tops of the sights or the back of the slide and can not see the front sight.  the gun doesnot fit.  In a high stress time you are going to point the gun and your generally want it to send a round where your pointing.
Good luck.

The gun blew apart when he shot it and he wasn't seriously injured?  I find this hard to believe.

Would not be the first time I've seen that happen , saw a Ruger Black Hawk come apart to the point were only the grip and part of the trigger guard were left and the shooter only had a few scrapes and some nasty powder burns to show for it .

Ask GB about the 44 mag TC barrel that he lost and he still has all his fingers and toes .

Granted the Hi-point may not be the best gun in the world but neither were the Ravins or Jenings 25 autos and they sold a ton of them and they still do .

Not everyone is going to like the Hi-points , ask most cops why they don't like them , the'll tell you its because they are cheap to buy and the DO shoot .

I have a 995 and a JH 45 that was given to me, and they have not given me any FTF's or other issues at all.  If anyone has issues with their Hi-Points you can send them back to the company where they will be fixed for free no questions asked no matter if your the first owner or the 100th.

I used to be a HP basher, but not no more.

For those that don't like them, I just say don't buy them.

Nonya I have to ask, did you send your Hi-Point in to have the problem fixed?

Any firearm can KB simply because of improper loading of ammunition, as the QC has gotten way out of hand in the ammo factories.  Rounds are showing up in factory ammo boxes with bullets seated in up side down.

Here is a factory .40 cal found in a box of ammo:

Lets understand any handgun can run battery if there is a problem with the firing pin and cause a primer strike for what ever the reason.  I've seen it with expensive 1911's where the gun went into battery after the slide was released so it can happen to the best of them.

I can only attest to my own person experience with the 995 Carbine where it was carried on duty in Petroleum County Sheriff's Office as the County was so broke they could not afford a nice MP5.  I have over 2,000 rounds on that 995 without a FTF or any other problems.  I also own my own 995 and as of yet report zero problems as I keep it clean after every trip to the range... not bad for a $135.00 OTD previously owned 995 Carbine.  I also own a JH 45 that my brother inlaw gave me, simply because he did not like it.  I have run a battery of rounds thru it with no problems to date.  If I do encounter any problems at all, I will just send them in for what ever needs fixed.

I can't help but wonder,  if you experienced the same problem with a Colt,  Smith & Wesson,  Ruger,  Glock,  etc.,  would you slam those companies off too?

One thing that I think all of us that visit these gun forums have in common is we wholeheartedly support the 2nd amendment.  So,  if you wholeheartedly support the 2nd amendment,  and I'm assuming you do,    you should support your brothers in arms regardless of the name brands of firearms they purchase.  If they work for them and their satisfied with them,  who are you to pee on their parade?   Why are you so hell-bent on degrading a U.S. firearms company,  because you claim you bought one of their firearms that blew up on you when you fired it,  but you didn't take advantage of their lifetime warranty?   Whats' your goal here?  What are you looking to achieve?

Was at the range a few weekends ago and one of the guys who works there had his S&W 44mag revolver completely blew up and apart on him. Luckily not a scratch on him because of the way they are designed to blow apart outward and away from the shooter. He talked to S&W and they sent him a prepaid FedEx box for him to send it to them for analysis. Since the guy hand loads, my guess is he likely mis calculated one...... Non theless, I was glad to hear that the revolver blew outward and away.

I recently had a problem with some Federal factory loads in my Savage 116 in 270 win. Peeled off a round and holly poop, that was differant!!Felt more like my 300 mag.  Pulled the bolt back and the case would not eject. Pulled out the case and the noticed the ejector was broken, the spring was completely crushed and the shell case looked like someone took a spot welder to it. Took the gun and shell case to the gun smith and it appears this one got away from Federal when they loaded it up, way UP....

I wounder what would happen to a HP in these circumstances??

I'm sure anythings' possible with any firearm regardless of who made it.  HP claims their pistols and carbines will handle the hotter +p and +p+ 9mm loads.

I love my 9mm carbine.  Very accurate at 50 yards (2 inch, 10 shot groups).  Eats any ammo I put thru it.  And I bought  a bunch of Promags a while back, and after tweaking the feed lips they function flawlessly (make an adjustment tool out of a small screwdriver ground off and then slotted).  Have had one problem.  Bought this gun 5 years (maybe more) so might have been one of the first manufactured.  The underside of the bolt started breaking up (the thin strips of metal between the grooves).  Called, then sent the bolt to HP and they replaced, said problem had been fixed with new material.  No problems since. Haven't heard much good about the pistols.

I certainly don't think they're "junk."  They're not a "high quality" weapon either.  They don't claim to be.  They're an inexpensive firearm.  I've got a C-9 and it's not bad at all.  It's no Colt Gold Cup, or Sig, but for $139.00 it's been "ok."

Don't worry about HP. When Obama takes office, HP will be put out of business because they will fall pray to the "Junk" or "Cheap" gun legislation that was floating around in congress a few years back.

With Obama, Biden, Reed, Pelosi and their great friends in the anti 2nd amendment movement. We can stop worrying about HP and similar companies. Obama the savor, is going to protect us from affordable firearms becasue of the harm they casue to us. We need his help, lets let him take care of these type of problems. At least we won't have to talk about them anymore. ::) ::)

Like CajunBass said,  HP's are not a high quality firearm,  but they go bang when you pull the trigger,  and are surprisinly accurate for a weapon in their price range.  While they are not a Colt,  Ruger,  Smith & Wesson,  I wouldn't put HP in the same class as Jennings,  Lorcin,  or RG.
