Y'all are cordially invited to the SECOND annual New River Valley (NRV) Mortar and Cannon Shoot !

Scheduled for Saturday Oct. 4th near FLOYD, Virginia. (Same place as before.)

We'll start at noon or early afternoon. Details and maps to follow. Kindly give us an indication of intent so we know how many steaks to get. (Well, maybe hotdogs.)

Count us in, Tim!! We enjoyed last year's shoot so much, that we have been telling everyone how wonderful you Virginians are ever since. We are bringing the big, bad Confederate Ironclad blaster with us, the 7" Treble-Banded Brooke Seacoast and Navy Rifle and also a "Mystery Gun" that's has been in the works for quite a while. It will be the very first public showing of both and every one there will be offered a chance to blow up a water-filled milk jug with either one. We are looking forward to meeting everyone and having lots of fun.

Well !

I'll just have to make up some 'match grade' 4-1/2" diameter PVC pipe lengths filled with concrete for this event.

Last year was a memorable event; I hope we can at least match it this year.

We're looking foreward to the quality mortars/cannons you are brining; as well as to renew the friendship!

This is an OPEN event, you don't need an engraved invitation, so y'all come!

Well I'm glad to see the date is finally set!
I'm still cannonless, if I can I'll change that before hand, either way I'm a comming!
It will be good to meet some of the folks here in person!

I will try to be there. Thats a long way, but it sounds like it would be worth it. How long is the range? how far can the mortars shoot there? 200? 300 yards? I am trying to find some longer range shoots to go to .

This will indeed be a fun shoot to be able to meet y'all.

THere are pictures posted of the 'range' (looks more like a fairway with a small stream at the bottom).

100 yds is clear. Somewhat under 200 is an open clearning. 300 is there, but covered with trees; so round spotting would be problematic.

George -

I've been an FO before. So if you are going to shoot a few our way we need to establish a few protocols - call for fire, authentication and such.

Since Virginia will BILL you for any fires started, I suggest inert projectiles - certainly no white phosphorous!

Time of flight will be interesting to calculate too - what is it 3,000 miles?

Come to think of it, the dispersion would be too great for safety - our firing line would be included in the normal expected area of impact.

Open to suggestions though.

You could try a practice round this weekend - we're in Virginia Beach .

I was thinking that one was needed for the shots through the trees. Certainly cross country is beyond the range of anything I have by a few orders of magnitude. I have thought about coming but I wouldn't be able to get off work long enough for a cross-country drive, even if it were as direct as possible.

Unfortunately, my work schedule is almost non-stop travel for Sept and October. I think I'll be crawling around inside a huge kiln in Baton Rouge that weekend.

Dan - A Swedish touch on the barbeque would be cool! Send a recipe we can play with and we'll fire it up too!

Don - We certainly will do video. There are a couple of folks at work that are into it and SOMEONE WILL perform that function.

George - Hmmm. Couldn't you get flex-time and program as you're driving?

Where are they, Tim? I remember how interesting it was to see the lay of the land last year. Just to let those Golf Ball Mortar shooters know that they will have an interesting target to shoot at, Mike and I are bringing a galvanized steel tub all the way from Colorado to Floyd. Filled with water, and placed at 30 to 40 yards, it should be lots of fun. We will bring the exploding chalk-line, chalk targets again as well.

Any other novelty targets you guys can think of would certainly be appreciated. Care to share?

The pics of the range are there, but I just can't locate them. Did the Cupid Fish eat them?? We will also be assembling two other targets that will energetically disassemble upon being hit with a low, medium or high velocity hit of ANY cannon caliber.

intoodeep, Don't know if all that stuff will fit, but we won't get that car until next summer; the backorder list is out to 16 months now!

Double D, When you host this Shoot next year in Montana, I bet you'll want to hear far more creative excuses from those Virginians! Come on. All you have to do is make it to Broomfield, CO! We will handle the driving from there. Of course, you will be in the rear with the gear, but just think of the excellent company you will have. You and Mike can talk about Martinis all the way to Floyd! Don't worry about fitting in; we have a place for everything except our powder charges. I know! Since they're in a low, large diameter tin, you can sit on that!!

This little howitzer could get an air-burst every time!

Mike shoots at the two Chalk-line chalk containers we had taped together at 200 yds. A hit on the the third shot, caused a huge cloud of blue dust to hang in the air like a giant, helium-filled, Smurf! Fun in Floyd!!

There were some Gonnes and smaller mortars there as well. I counted 15 Cannons and Gonnes on the firing line.

Last, but certainly not least, is this beautiful Confederate Coehorn with a very well done, authentic mortar bed built by a Floyd resident.

Now that you all know what the range looks like, will you join us in Floyd, VA?

Well Me and the Miss's will be there! when I told her it was in floyd she perked right up she really likes it up there in the hills we were there 2 years ago in Sept. for a Bluegrass festivel she's been wanting to go back ever since. I'm hoping to have something done and shootable by then!

That is the same weekend for N-SSA nationals in wichester va. you know right. what time will you guys be shooting on sunday? my best bet is to take an extra day and shoot monday but i konw i am not the only one that is coming.
I will see what I can do. I am having a 2.25 confederate mountian rifle on a 1st model prarie carraige so my money is tight right now too.

You guys who haven't been to Ft. Shenadoah, should go without a doubt. Right next door is Back Creek Gun Shop a GOEX distributor.

As much as I would like to go, it's just not in the cards.

I agree, Ft Shenendoah is the big-ticket event. But if you can't get up there y'all are welcome to attend and/or participate in our SW Virginia get together!

Wayne - WELCOME to the board! I'll post directions soon. Same as last time. I'll dig out the coordinates and google maps too. (All of that's on another computer I'll have to dig out of mothballs.)

The 'range' is a few miles South of Floyd just off of 221.

And I had my mouth all set for steak. Anywhose, is it Saturday or Sunday, as the 5th is a Sunday? Just want to be sure.

Here's a question.... I have a friend who I was telling about this shoot, is this a muzzeloader shoot only?

or would a M1903 Krupp 50MM mountian gun (registered DD) be welcome?

Like this one? They told us at the shoot that this was the Model 1895 Krupp, but these are way out of our area of expertise, so we will leave that up to those much more familiar with these cannon than we are. Lots of fun to shoot!!

havent reading this post for a while , but of course I will help you with an recepy .

first of all you need to prepare an marinade 5 - 7 days before the barbeque if you want real tender steaks .
boil two bottles of red wine with one lbs honey , 0,5 lbs salt , 8 - 9 ounces roughly grind black pepper and 0,5 lbs realy hot habenero in small pieces .
when its all mixed together you boil it very gentle for 3 - 4 min and let it cool , then you put in another two bottles of red wine of good quality , the first two bottles you could use some cheaper stuff .
then you mix 10 lbs of garlic with an mixer or blender to an loose batter.
mix it all together and you will have an marinade enough for 40 - 50 large t-bone steaks .
put the steaks and the marinade in an large bowl and keep it in the refrigerator for minimum 5 days , turn them around a few times each day and I promiss you the best t-bone you ever have eaten .
but they must be at least 1,5 inch thick .
place them a bit higher then usualy from the charcoal brickets that you dont need to turn them over more then one time . and of course put lots of hickory and pimento chips on the glow all the time .
I would guess 8 - 10 min at each side , dont overdo them . and lots of garlic butter on top of them when eating .
dont buy the garlic butter , do it yourself .
room tempered butter , salt , fine grind white pepper and lots of carlic . mix it together a few days before the barbeque , put it on aluminum foil and roll it together to an saucage shaped item and store it in the refridgerator a few days to let the butter have some time to take the aroma from the pepper and garlic .
when you use it just unfoil it and let people cut slices as they want . but must be kept in the refridgerator until it will be used .
the alcohol in the wine will help to tender the meat .
all this amounts is approximately , I never use an recepy when cooking , its all just an fingertip feeling ;-)
