There are many more detail shots, others took shots of people and the cannons firng.

MANY thanks to Mike and Tracy for making the journey (1500 miles?) and bringing their fine workmanship 1/6th scale Brooke.

Thanks to DOM and Wayne - for making the efforts to make our fun more enjoyable.

Thanks to Dale and Dennis for providing the facilities and the pork BBQ.

Thanks DD for calling during the shoot - as you have in the past!

Looking forward to seeing the other pictures!

Wayne did real well with his golf ball mortar and kept those solids within a 30 foot radius at 150 yards which is darn good shooting.

I warmed up Tim's Gonne before almost hitting a crab apple tree at 130 yards.  It was really fun to shoot and the was no recoil at all!

Mike and I chased a chalk dust container all over a ten acre field, but it proved very elusive.  Two water jugs were under the gun and they geysered as the Colo. cannon guys ended their reign of terror.  Honest Dennis, we tried to replace our divots, but those patches of sod were blown to atoms as the 9 oz steel bolts impacted them.

We worried that we would have to catch the tube which is not secured in the trunnion cradles, because of the severe depression of the muzzle to hit the targets which are on a lower plane.  1860s engineering was proved good; we did not need capsquares.

Thanks to Dennis, Dale and Tim for making this shoot possible!

We will be back,

Mike and Tracy

Looks like you guys had fun. It's nice to see so much greenry and property. We don't get much of that in the LV desert. Wish I could have been there! On a side note I watched the video and I might recommend a Berzomatic lighter with a flexible end (see link below). They can be found at most stores for $3.50 - $4.50. They work better than the BBQ lighters and you don't singe your fingers with a regular lighter.  ;) I just think that skin (and even hair) were meant to be kept on our fingers.  ;D

Once again, M&T, the Brooke is a work of art!

P.S.- The ones I purchaced are pre-LED.

Interesting to note the Brooke dips its muzzle upon firing.  I guess you do need additional preponderance.

One more:

We agree, we were firing at a depressed angle and discussion was just that, that the preponderance should be a little further back.

With the muzzle below the center line the perponderance is is going to be over come by recoil force pretty easily.

You guys should also make a linstock for lighting fuses, no open flame and issue with wind.  Much less hassle and more controllable than lighters. http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums//index.php/topic,65288.0.html

But in this case there are, by design, no trunion caps.  So the issue is that of keeping true to the design - which I assume was not intended to fire at negative angle being a seacoast artillary piece.  It is normally a stable situation, but we were firing it depressed as we were on the high ground.

We did have a linstock with us that Wayne brougt - worked well too, other than that the cord burned a little faster than our rate of fire.

Thanks for the fuse lighting info intoodeep and Douglas, but we just forgot to bring our pizo-electric propane bottle rig which is THE ONLY thing to use on the prairie where we usually shoot.  We went through ALL KINDS of lighting devices and we evenyually went to what 95% of those guys at the Casper, WY cannon shoot use, which is Hank Hill's favorite steak scorching gas, Propane.

As for the muzzle dip, we recalculated the preponderance and find it to be correct at 8 pounds.  Remember that this is an exact 1/6th scale rifled cannon.  Every full scale Parrott 10 Pdr. we have seen shoot, does precisely the same thing.  Maybe Artilleryman can tell us why.

Capsquares are not necessary for all those reasons everyone discussed in the previous thread on shooting the 7" Treble-Banded Brooke Rifle.

Regards,

Tracy and Mike

The perponderance is calculated based a on a level center line, is that correct?

So if the muzzle is raised above the level center line and the breech is lowered below the level centerline, does the muzzle dip when fired.

When it's pointed downward such as you had to do I would expect the muzzle to dip.

The fact that you had to point the muzzle down like you did says to me the that the Brooke is a very flat shooting gun in direct fire. I wonder what kind of range you get with it in indirect fire?   I bet I can find some fallow wheatfields we could shot into to find out.

I'm wondering if raising the back of the table in line with the barrel would maintain preponderance when firing.  Firing with the muzzle pointed down raises the breech above the trunion centerline
[center of momentum]  that would cause the breech to try to climb over the trunions.

Mike and Tracy,   VERY NICE GUN !!!

The fact that you had to point the muzzle down like you did says to me the that the Brooke is a very flat shooting gun in direct fire. I wonder what kind of range you get with it in indirect fire?     The external ballistics site we use calculates the maximum range for a 9 oz. wadcutter with steel's sectional density at 1250 fps. will be approx. 3,500 yards.          I bet I can find some fallow wheatfields we could shot into to find out.     Some experiments at your location may occur;  sounds like a nice invite to me!

Dom, we tried having the bore axis parallel to the tops of the iron shod rails, but the whole gun will tip forward slightly if you exceed 7 or 8 degrees, and in this particular case, we needed 12 to 15 degrees.  The fulcrum for the upper carriage lifting mechanism is just behind the front wheel axle to make it possible for the original Confederate crew to lift the weight of the carriage and tube to those wheels for an easy "Return to Battery" after loading.

More experiments in the shop and on the range are necessary.  Oh darn!!   ;D ;D
