« on: August 14, 2008, 02:42:58 AM »
just wondering what the bullet preference of other shooters is and why.  have been shooting amax and matchkings with good success but am thinking about trying the berger vld.  anyone have experience with the berger before i place the order.

What is the goal?  I prefer different bullets for different tasks.  Maximum accuracy?  Long range?  100 Yards?  Varmint performance?  Game hunting?  Going BANG?    ???

Berger bullets are very good on the whole IME.  However, the VLD bullets may need a tighter twist - you haven't stated what the cartridge or caliber is.  Your rifle may - or may not - have the right twist for the bullets you want to use.  Again, we need more information.

the gun is tikka varmint in 223 with 1:8 twist, 24" barrel.  shooting distance is 300 to 500 yards.  am presently using 69 gr matchkings and they do ok at 500.  have some 77 gr matchkings loaded but haven't been to the range with them yet.  also have some 75 gr amax but have not had a chance to load and test.  wanting to try the 80 gr vld but looking for some opinions on that one before i order.

also remington 700 vssf in 22-250 with 1:14 twist, 26" barrel.  Shooting distance is 300 to 500 yards.  presently using 52 gr amax and matchkings.   both of these do very well in the gun.

FWIW, I'm pretty sure your 1/14 Rem ain't gonna like those heavier bullets.  I never even tried any 60's in mine (way back when I developed my loads they didn't have them as components) and used Sierra MK 52 or 53's for factory matches and bulk 55's (read cheap but no fmj's) for Pdogs.
A lot of your custom and semi custom bullet have a longer ogive and don't do well in your slower twist barrels.  They may do great in the 1/8 you're shooting. IMO, you might be stretching the barrel on that .223 a bit.

have no plans to try the heavy ones in the remington, 52's are working good with the 1:14.  playing around mostly with the 223 at present.  i'm 9 months into this reloading thing and having a lot of fun.  just trying to get a feel for what others are shooting.  as stated, i have only used the amax and matchking.

I've often wondered about this same topic.  In my case I'd love to have a bullet that did it all in 30 cal.  I'd like to know what bullet can be developed for the long range shooting and also be used for hunting deer.  I agree with the idea of different bullets work better for different jobs, but it'd be great to find one that did it all.  I use 168gr matchkings for the shooting range, and 220gr pro-hunters for bear hunting.

I have had excellent luck with both Sierra and Berger 80 gn. bullets in my .22-6mm at around 3,200 fps. with an 8 twist. You should be alright at .223 velocities also with the 8 twist. At 3,450 fps. my accuracy was not near as good.
