Most accurate 12 gauge slug for rifled barrel?
« on: August 14, 2008, 01:16:20 PM »
My favorite Activ slugs are no longer available. Rather than waste lots of money and wear and tear on my shoulder, I am hoping to get a consensus as to the most accurate slugs everyone is using? What's your preference for accuracy at 100 yards?

I am shooting Brenneke Black Magic 3 inch slugs out of a smooth bore and get very respectable 3 inch groups at 100 yards.  I dont know about their slugs for rifled barrels, but if I am getting those groups out of a smooth bore... Their slugs for rifled barrels cant be that bad.

It's truly impossible to tell you what slug would be the most accurate in your slug gun, but......

If I had to pick one slug that seems to shoot well out of most guns it would be a lightfield.  These slugs swell to fit the bore of the shotgun and the sabot and slug are keyed together and form almost a custom slug for each bore.

There are flashier slugs, more expensive slugs, slugs that have better ballistics (especially past 100 yards) but I still like lightfields and have had very good luck with the 20 gauge loads.  A buddy of mine shoots the 12 gauge loads and the last deer he shot (@ 50 yards or so) fell down dead within a few steps.  No tracking required.  I shot a good buck a couple of years back with a 20 gauge lightfield slug and he managed to run maybe 20 yards and just stopped and fell over.  Truly impressive performance.

MY H&R Ultra Slug Hunter likes 2 3/4" Lightfield Hybreds...You results may not be as satisfying as mine though as every gun is different.

Every gun is different and not all barrels like the same slugs, but I'll tell you what I have. I shoot a 12 gauge Remington 870 with a hastings barrel. Just last season I tried the new Hornady SST sabot slugs (2-3/4") and they are great. 2000 fps muzzle velocity, super accurate, and super deadly. My gun is sighted in at 100 yards and I'm getting one inch groups and sometimes better. And they aren't that expensive either, $12 or $13 a box.

I have a friend with an H&R Ultra Slug Hunter and he shoots the Federal sabot slugs withe the barnes expanders, also 2-3/4". He also has his gun sighted in at 100 yards and gets superior accuracy as well. These slugs also have great knockdown power, 2 years ago he knocked a buck of its feet at 130 yards.

Hope I was some help.

Win. BRI is the most accurate out to a 100yd. in my 870 Hasting, 1100 Hastings, and USH.

I agree to that!  The Lightfiels has been the best and most consistent that I have tried in the rifled gun.

As to the smooth bore, the Brenneke 211 55 14 is about as good a factory slug as we have found out of a non choked barrel.  We get 3 shot groups averaging 4" at 100 yds.

The Ballistic products offering called the Dangerous game slug is also good for about 4" at 100 out of a non choked smooth bore.   Load it with 31 to 34 grains of WW540 if  you can find any, or I SUSPECT a similar amount of Longshot, into a cheddite primed hull and use Ballistic Products roll crimp tool and it will certainly do the job out to 100 yds.

After that, it is just a hail mary shot anyway......

I know it would be a wonderful world if what other people are using would work in your gun.
The truth of the matter is as state by others the only way to tell is buy some slugs that you would like to try, i.e. Barnes expanders, Hornaday SST and try them out. The SST’s are deadly accurate ( less than 3 in groups @100) in my Benelli and so are the Barnes expanders although the other Barnes (1oz slugs) worked great a 5o yards, I could barely keep them on a 2’x3’ sheet of paper @ 100.
The reason I changed from the SST’s was: one deer I shot the bullet seemed to explode on impact not entering the chest cavity (the only reason I know this is the guy next to me hit and knocked down the deer) I had other just pass straight though Small hole going in and a small hole coming out.

The Barnes expanders are grouping about 3in @ 100, so I will be using them this year. My old 870 liked the Barnes 1oz slugs (the style BRI introduced about 25/30 years ago) My older Winchester 1200 could hit a 6in paper plate @ 100 every time using the BRI, but my 870 hated them.
So the long and short of it good news or bad, you need to find what works in your gun.
Some guys I know think the Berneke Foster style slugs work great out of their rifled barrels. If I thought they would work out of my gun I would try them, and may just do that, as they are cheap 3 to 4 dollars a box.

Just my 2 cents ;D

In all the different slug guns I have shot, the 2 3/4"  1 1.4 oz. Lightfield Hybreds worked the best for accuracy.
I just got back from the gun shop with a case of them, they shoot great in all three of my slug guns.  Baretta Extrema, Encore slug barrel and my Remington 870.

Winchester BRI slugs from mossbergs to marlin and everything in-between one of the most consistently accurate slugs I have shot. Without out going into a great diatribe. Ballistic Reasearch Institute was a company unto itself until Winchester saw the accuracy potential, and bought them out.
Some of Ligthfield slugs have that similar hour glass shape. While not having a very good ballistic coefficient,ie 125 yds is about it. The accuracy IMHO, is far superior to the bullet in the sabot design.
