« on: July 30, 2003, 02:34:34 AM »
I have a Remington 870 express that the slide wont lock closed I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what they did to fix it.I was also wondering if anyone had any idea of the cost to fix it.The shotgun was only $200 new.
Thanks for any help,
Lynnbuck

I guess the first thing to ask is- how old is this weapon?  If it's fairly new a trip to Remington may be in order..  Still we may be able to take care of this ourselves.  Does the bolt lock into the barrel extension?  I by saying the slide won't lock closed you mean the sslide release lever does NOT have to be pressed to allow the slide to be manipulated then the problem is likely with the fire control mechanism.  That's the assembly that's removed by pressing out the 2 cross pins in the receiver.  The action bar lock is probably at fault.  Removing the assembly and pressing the release button should show what is happening.  If this is more than you wish to undertake a trip back to Remington or to a local smith may be in order.  If the weapon is not heavily worn and is fairly new I would suggest Remington, even though I've been very unimpressed by their service dept in my last few attempts.  Of course they are still better than S&W!!  If you would like more detailed instructions I will certainly try but I would suggest you look at the mechanism before we continue.

Thanks for the info. The shotgun is about 10 yrs old ,but looks like new.Ive been using a 50s vintage 870 with a fixed mod.barrell and no recoil pad.I like it a lot but the express is a lot more comfortable to shoot and it has interchangable choke tubes.Guess im just gonna have to find a smith around here to fix it.

With the gun unloaded drift our the two trigger assembly pins in the reciever and remove the trigger assembly. See if there is crud or some object in the trigger assembly jamming the release or if the release is bent. Maybe a little oil after spraying off with carb and choke cleaner will do the trick. Dave
