Illnesses from Ticks and other Bugs
« on: August 15, 2008, 07:23:40 PM »
Although this post may not fit into this particular discussion, I am discussing what may be very important as people start to enter the woods for what ever reasons this coming up season. The question is how many people have or know someone who has gotten an illness from ticks or any other bugs. Please let us know what kind of bug it was and what the illness from it was, and if possible what environment it was such as just back yard garden or deep woods. For those that actually have gone deep into the woods, if you picked up ticks/ bugs how many were you able to find on your body and whether or not you gotten ill. I will post this in other discussions to reach the greatest number of users. I understand that this may be getting into privacy issues but I think it would be very informative and educational for myself and others. Thanks.

howdy trendy this might be a little late but here goes anyway.  a buddy of mine was stationed in new york state, and he got some kind of palsy from a tick that paralyzed half his face for a while.  don't know what the exact name was, sorry.  he picked it up around the woods around the hudson river.  something that might help some folks avoid this, and i don't mean to jack your thread, is cutter advanced bug spray.  i started using it during bow season 3 years ago.  i had deer downwind of me that didn't seem to mind the smell of it, and i don't use any scent eliminating products for hunting. i just try to keep the wind in my face.  this is in the tx panhandle if that makes any difference.  might give it a try in your areas.  i would rather prevent these diseases than have to experience them first hand!

I know of 1 guy who got lime disease from a tick, he is not a hunter either.  he lost all energy and couldnt do much (physically) or work, he may have gotten the tick from the backyard but he is not sure even when he got the tick.  On the other hand two of my family members get 10 - 12 almost everytime they enter the woods and have never gotten sick.

I wear repelants on my bowhunting/hunting clothing, the whitetail deer on the east side of the Flathead Valley this year were loaded with ticks.  What we got on us, we got off of us and out of cloths quickly and got them bagged.  No reported sicknesses with the hunting party I was with.

The ticks that transmit Lyme disease are some little bitty beggars. I've had them on me and attached, but haven't had any side effects. I've gotten to where when I go home from hunting, I undress downstairs, in front of the washing machine. After pitching my stuff in the wash, I'll spray the floor with some Raid or something to kill any that drop off me. My wife's had a couple on her in the past few years and hasn't been in the woods for quite sometime, let alone working in the yard.

Do your families a favor...wear some sort of bugspray or take precautions to make sure your wives and/or kids don't come down with something YOU bought home for them, unintentionally.
