New rifle
« on: August 16, 2008, 09:54:24 AM »
Well I sold a trapdoor cadet the other day and have a check sitting at the gun shop.
The guy rule states that money from a sold gun has to be spent on another one so.
I have a few on my list and was wanting som help in picking out my next rifle.
I think I want either a
Ruger compact in 308 win with a Trijicon 1.25-4X28 scope as a light weight walking around rifle. (Pigs, deer, and preditors)
CZ 527 American in 223 with a Weaver 3-9X38 scope on it as a preditor rifle. (Coyote, bobcat, varmints, and Javilina)
Remington XCR in 7MM Mag with a Trijicon 3-9X40 scope as a mountain rifle. ( Deer and Elk)
or a
CZ 453 American in 22 LR with a Weaver 3-9X38 scope as a fun gun. (It's a 22 nuff said!)
If any of you have either good or bad things to say about the combo's above please let me know.  I already have guns for most of what these would but think these would fit better in some applications than what I own now.  The only new addition in caliber would be the 7mm mag.

Those are quite a variety of weapons.  Everyone has it's own niche.  If I were you I'd get a six pack and two aspirins (for the headache you'll get thinking) then sit in front of my gun safe and thing hard about which niche needs filling! ;)

I have been  wanting that rifle with a  Burris timberline  scope for some time.
I actualy held one yesterday. It was very hard to put down.

I have the Remington model 700xcr in 270wsm and love it. Very accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I topped it with a Burris Euro-Diamond 2.5x10x44mm objective. 30mm main tube. Using both Warne bases and ring.It has the Burris Ballistic Plex retical. Shooting factory 150gr.  Winchester Power Point ammo chronographed 3200fps. Goes well with the Ballistic Plex retical. Shot this mule deer doe last season at a lasered 298yds. one shot and took out both lungs.http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg178/700xcr/1209070959-00.jpg :)

Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr

That ruger sounds like a sweet deal.  The 20 inch ultra lights are awesome guns.  A friend of mine has one and boy is it a tastefull peice.  We chronod some handloads through it and you would be surprised at how little velocity that .308 loses.  We hit mid 2600s with three or four 180 grain loads!!!  That is plenty serious for anything on this continent!

Of those listed, I'd choose the Remington XCR in 7MM Mag with a Trijicon 3-9X40 scope.

For a "mountain rifle" I'd go with the Ruger .308 every time.  Will be shooting my Remington .308 at 500 yards tomorrow and have never taken game I could not have taken as easily with a Ruger Compact .308 win.

Forget the 6 pack and the aspirins. The answer is simple! Just put alittle more money in and get them all.  ;) I`m sure your wife will understand.  ;)

"Remington XCR in 7MM Mag with a Trijicon 3-9X40 scope as a mountain rifle. ( Deer and Elk)"

I was considering the same rifle just yesterday , but also wanted a 700 bdl in 7mm rem mag .I have the bdl on order then the other next month.

When it comes to deciding which rifle to buy ...I'm like a woman in a shoe store . I'll have to buy both and especially if its "on sale". LOL

Get the Remington XCR in 7MM Mag, nice gun!

The Ruger Compact gets my vote. I have one in 260 Rem and my friend has one in 7mm-08. Its surprising how accurate these little shorties are.

Like others have said....thats kind of a broad range of caliber options.  For centerfire, even though not on your list...my choice is 7mm-08.

I can speak to the CZ 453 though as I have one and love it.  It is every bit as accurate at the Anschutz 1416D I once had and the single set trigger is just plain sweet!!!!  Put a Burris 4-12x33 compact scope w/target knobs on it and it is absolutely a tack driver.  Here's a pic of the rifle and a black death target shot with this rifle on it's first trip to the range.  The white circles on the target are 1/2" and each of the targets is a 5 shot group.

If you are thinking 22LR....you made the right pick with the CZ453!

Freezer,
No the headache has not gotten to me.  I changed jobs two weeks ago and have been busy moving and learning the new products.
I would like to keep the gun to a calier I already have.  While I do have a 6.5X55 Swede I have not found a rifle I want in it.  Ruger made a M77 for a while and it would be great.  I did consider a stainless Hawkeye in 243 but then thought that a 308 can do everything the 243 can and more.  I know CZ makes a great rifle in the 550 that is chambered in 6.5 but the 550 action is a really big and heavy and if I were going to use the action I may as well get a caliber made for it.
First shot,
Like the rifle.  Shoots well too.  Is that off the bench or are you shooting at a match?
I think I'm leaning to the 527 rifle for now but the others are still on the list to get as funds are available.
