44MAG ACCURACY LOAD
« on: July 30, 2003, 07:27:49 AM »
I am looking for an accurate load for a 275 gr WFN plain base hard cast bullet. I am currently shooting 20.5grains of H110 in my Ruger SBH with 4 5/8" bbl. I am currently getting 3" - 4" groups at 25 yds with iron sights but would like better to hunt. Any info would help.

Thanks
Trey

I would have advised a load like the one you're already using. But since it's not working, try 2400 powder and make a lighter load.  I can't help you with charge weights right now.

You might also try some L'il Gun powder.  Worked real well for me with a 240 gr XTP and in my 45 Colt.

Especially using plain base bullets, I would lower the charge.

Are you getting any leading? That's got to be pushing those bullets pretty good.

I would think that charge should be pretty accurate for that size bullet with GC design. Just my thoughts.

Good luck, the 44mag can be one accurate round.

Tony D alludes to a good point: It may be the bullets. Hornady XTPs are excellent jacketed bullets that can be used to test the maximum accuracy of a gun. If you can't get it to shoot with them, I would begin to wonder if there was a problem with the muzzle crown or my shooting technique.

I shoot 22.6grains of Winchester 296 with a 240gr XTP for 1.5'' at 50 yds. 22.8 gr of H110 at 2'' at 50 yds. Both with a red dot,out of a Super Redhawk.

That may be a little warm for a plain base but I have seen PB bullets driven almost as fast as GC if they fit right. Check for leading and also make sure the bullets are sized to fit the cyl. They should just slip through the front of the cyl. Some of the later Rugers are quite tight and shaving is a bit of a problem. I know some claim that it makes no difference but if it shaves to one side it can throw it off balance. Lapping the bbl also can help if the bore isn't straight and smooth. Does it shoot other bullets well?

Might try 2400.  Seems to be a little kinder to plain based bullets.  Over 30+ years have found it to be consistantly more accurate over 110 and 296.  It has a good bit less muzzleblast and flash also.  I'd try 17.5gr to 18.5 gr.  LBT designs need a little more velocity to stabilize over SWC's.  Might try a pre-cast SWC with your same charge to see if its the bullet rather than the charge.
