Proposed Rule's Change? Rifles/Carbines in Handgun Calibers?
« on: August 17, 2008, 01:30:03 PM »
Anyone heard whether this is just a rumor or will probably pass for gun deer season?

I guess Indiana and Ohio have done it.  Heard Illinois is going to pass it as well.  Didn't see anything on any of the other sites.

The wife and I worked the BB gun tent for IDBR down at the state fair this last weekend but, didn't even hear the rumor? Where did you hear this?

A friend who has his fingers on the pulse of a professional outfitter in Illinois.  Mentioned it at dinner the other night.  No idea when it will come down or if it will, but the discussion was that it was going to happen, if not for this season, then next.  All I know.  For now, just a rumor.

Interesting prospects but what rifle to use?...To meet the legal calibers we might be getting into the more expensive lever actions that are in demand by the CAS group. Perhaps not, I think Marlin makes a reasonably priced lever for the .357??. Also to be considered would be the Average Accuracy of a lever action which is around 4" @ 100yds I believe which is doable with any of my three SA revolvers.
I still think that the concept is a good one and would like to see it adapted, we still need more rifles though, is a handi or others avalible in our legal calibers?

Handi rifles, Marlins, Rossi Pumas, Contender Carbines!  Also, if the law stipulates the same cartridges that are legal for handgun season, you would see the straight walled cartridges like .45-70, .444, .500 S&W, .450 S&W, .375 Winchester, .454 Casull possibly being legal.

Again, this is just rumor at this time, but Indiana and Ohio did it a couple years ago, and maybe even Michigan though I'm hazy about that.  We'll have to see.

What about 9mm,  40S&W,  and 45ACP carbines?  They pack enough punch to use on Illinois whitetails.   H&R/NEF makes some very good single shot rifles in 357 mag, 44 mag, and even though it isn't a pistol cartridge I think the good 'ole tried & true 30/30 should be included.

Good questions but I dont think that they will allow the 30/30. That 9mm might qualify on the diameter but will it produce the required 500ft lbs of energy?
We might be getting the cart ahead of the horse on this topic but it has been done in Ohio & Indy as said.

I hope it does happen. I've been wanting a 44 mag lever gun for a while now. ;)

I think the best solution to Illinois' growing deer heard problem isn't different type of weapons we can hunt with(although it does make it interesting and fun) but, IDNRs Mayor Daley laws?

I agree.  It amazes me how the mayor of Chicago can dictate Illinois state laws.  Somethings' not right here!

If it were you or me trying to buck a supreme court ruling our butts would be in prison.  But,  Chicago and Washington DC can get away with it?  Again I say,......somethings' not right here!!!

I think it is too late for any changes this year.
But with enough pressure from citizens and interest groups, we could see some changes- allowing rifles and/or longer firearms seasons.
Bottom line is we need more does shot and let the young bucks walk, to control herd and keep up the quality hunting oportunity.
