7.62x39 range report
« on: August 17, 2008, 05:13:02 PM »
hello yall, i have been floating around here for some time and reading several topics and i really enjoy this site. i would like to see how everyone is fairing with there 7.62x39 rossi. i bought one 2 weeks ago and have put 40 rounds through it(mostly fiocchi) . i have been reading on here about extraction problems with the cheap russian ammo and have tried 1 wolf and 1 brown bear. i have'nt had any extraction problems but both times i had a ftf. like someone else posted if you fire it twice it will go off. i have purchased some american eagle, and federal power shock soft points but have yet to try either. i have had no problems with the fiochhi. i will keep ya'll posted on how well all the different brands group out of it. i have measured the bullets in several different kinds of ammo and here they are. also how well has everyone else been grouping out of theirs?
american eagle 124gr. fmj    .308
wolf fmj                             .308
wolf 123gr. sp                     .311

federal power shock 123gr sp  .310
winchester 123gr. sp             .311

Keep the range reports coming. I just bought a .223 bull barrel Rossi and the 7.62x39 is next on my list.

Interesting you measured .311 on the Wolf softpoints 123 grain... I measured .308 on the 154 grain Wolf softpoint.

well i shot 20 rounds of the american eagle ammo and it grouped fair, but i got alot of blowby on the casings. i do not know if it is from low pressure or thicker brass. i will try some through my sks and see if it will operate the slide. there was no obvious difference in recoil compared to the others. i will also measure the fired brass compared to the fiocchi. i am going to go shoot another box now and will let you know if it was just something wrong with that box.

well i shot another box of the american eagle and had blowby again. measured the case and it is .017 in. shorter than the rest. i don't know if this is something wrong with this lot or what but that is all i can find different than any others.

Hey Mr Texan,     I too have been lurking......

Ditto all above posts essentially.  I have had a good amount of blow by as well on American Eagle (Federal).  I was most pleased to measure and find I am .308 on my rounds as well.  My reload fodder is Hornady .310's which measured .309/.308 as well.

I shoot very nice groups with everything I send down the tube.  Perhaps it is that I Zero for about 60yds and have a 3x9x50 scope :)  but my groups are fabulous.  I am bummed out htat my reload equip for x39 is a complete resizing of the casing though....I will eventually may get a neck sizer only.  This would help eliminate blow potentially.

Just wanted to give you "first post"......for the person waiting to buy the x39 in Rossi....DON"T wait.  Mine was a close-out, maybe not true but I heard it was not being made any longer.  Hopefully hogwash as the x39 is excellent for the kids - and adults too.

Remember -- I think the more we shoot the better these will become.

hey glad to meet you cbxboy, these guns sure are alot of fun!!! i shot the remington sp today and they were grouping at about 6 inches. i also shot the pmc fmj today and they also were out about 6 inches. i had 2 out of 5 ftf with the pmc's also. i believe that anything smaller than .310 is going to fly all over the paper. i have tried just about every round i can get my hands on that is brass cased. if you have shoot any factory ammo, please post it on here that way it will be easy to find. have fun guys!!!

Mr Big ;)

Factory ammo I have shot has all been the Federal, just differing brands.  The last box was American Eagle branded FC.  FMJ's with Large rifle primers.  I am looking to reload primarily for my x39.  I also shot 7 or 8 rounds of Federal I purchased in 1999.  I have not shot many other rounds yet, but many of the Wolf and milsurp took 2 hits or never ignited at all.  I don't shoot often enough--live in the city.

Again, I shoot about 60yds or at an indoor range with a max of 48 yds.  I have never experienced a grouping of 6"......again I am relatively close range however.

I have 3 Rossi Single snow and all three are capable of 2" and under and I haven't even had a chance to get a favorite load worked up.  I have the .308, .270 and the x39.  Looking to add 30.06 some day as I just LOVE shooting the single.

Do you plan to reload??  If you do just buy a Lee Loader for JUST the Rossi.  Do it one shell at a time and neck size only, this should help as the brass will have expanded to fireform the chamber and decrease blow- by.  7.62x39 is most likely expanding quite a bit as MOST rifles are auto loaders in x39.

mrbigtexan were the bullets you measured pulled from the cases?

Something I noted on some pulled 123grain "Monarch" projectiles is that above the cannelure they mic .308 or so. But below the cannelure or the bullet shank that was inside the cased neck measures .311" using my very old but very accurate Lufkin mic

got out this weekend and dragged the old "Scatter Gun"/Rossi-7.62X39 with some of my reloads... IMR4198 from 21.0 grains up to 23 grains in 1/2 grain increments using Sierra 150 gr Round Nose .308 bullets... I was astonished some of my groups were less than 1/2 inch @ 50 yards!
I had all but given up on this gun.  Previously with factory ammo I was getting over 4 inch groups with an occasional flyer off the paper!  Im thinking that the factory ammo was .310 or .311... my barrel slugs out to .308.  I know someone previously asked about Rossi barrel diameter but I don't think many responded.  For those that have, can you post what your barrels slug out too?
