7-30 Walters brass from 30-30 ??
« on: August 18, 2008, 04:27:05 PM »
Has anyone formed 7-30 Walters brass from 30-30 brass ? and did you have any problems. I can't find any data on what pressures the 7-30 works at , I would guess that since it is in a contender it should be the same as a 30-30, plus 30-30 brass is about 1/4th the cost of 7-30 brass

Yes I am. I recently acquired a SST Super 14 7-30 Waters Contender Barrel. I also picked up 100 new Remington .30-30 Winchester Cases. I necked them down to 7mm careful to get the false shoulder in the right place so the cases headspaced on the shoulder rather than on the rim. I simply screwed my 7-30 Waters Die in a little at a time, necking down the brass as I went until I had a tight fit in my chamber and the action would shut with a snap.

I then fireformed them using Pistol Powder and Cream of Wheat via an article I found on the net using this procedure. Worked like a charm.

SD, did you use a buffer ie, tissue paper or poly filler between the powder and the cream of wheat ?  I do plan to use the false shoulder method, , it has worked well in making herrett and 7-R brass

I have had good luck using the 30 30 remington brass i did the same as SD but i used a min load and some cheap .284 bullets i had haven't had a problem yet i get better group using the 30 30 brass than the 7 30 fed brass sounds dumb i know. I will get a funny  looking shoulder when you take them out of the press.

I just size the 30-30 brass, load them with normal loads and shoot them.   I've done over the past 10 years without problems.  I find these rounds with the funny looking shoulder to be more accurate than those using perfectly sized casings.  I've even hunted deer with these rounds with nice results.  They have never let me down.

Blessings!

I seemed to get better groups with necked down 30-30 cases than with 7-30 brass. It sounded so crazy that I never posed this. Nice to know others had the same result.

I did have someone come up to me at the range, look at the round,  and ask, "What the H*ll is that?!" :)

I used a quarter sheet of toilet paper between the Powder and Cream of Wheat, and also on top of the Cream of Wheat so I didn't make a mess. The loading process took a lot longer than it did to shoot them.

I did 100 rounds easily in an afternoon. I had intended on just shooting them in my basement, but didn't and was glad I didn't. I would have had a heck of a mess of confette to clean up.

WayneS, I guess I am just lazy, but I have been shooting the 7-30 for 9 or 10 years and have never wanted to go through the trouble of fireforming brass.

EABCO and other places sell the brass for about $55/100, sometimes you can find it cheaper. Unless you just want to fireform for the fun? or experience, I would let someone else do the work.

I had never heard of anyone just sizing the 30-30 brass. I guess we never stop learning. That is interesting.

FTW,  I guess it's  personal thing but like SD pointed out by using 30-30 brass you can set a false shoulder for head spacing, plus 30-30 brass costs about  $ 20.00/100  less that 7-30 AND I have three flavors of brass, Rem. Rem (N) and W/W and I want to do a little "piddleing" to see which one holds up the best, not that a reason to go to the range is needed, but anything to help my fellow re loaders

MnMike,

Yeah, I've had the same reactions at the range too.  People think I'm crazy until they see the targets.  I like to hunt with the most accurate loads available to me and that is why I use loads using pre-fireformed brass.  Size, load and shoot works for me and has for years.

Blessings!

I have had the same experience as Shootnstr8.  I resize 30-30 brass, load em with whatever I am going to shoot, not any light loads, and shoot.  I have not had any problems and accuracy has been great.  I did get a bag of 7-30 Waters brass from EABCO but notice no difference in accuracy and as some have stated 30-30 brass is dirt cheap.

Buy the 375 win case and run them through and they are tougher than the 30-30 case and no fire form involved.

Thanks for the tip, I just ordered 500, enough for the 7-30, a 30-30, and a 30 Herrett, and I get to set a false shoulder on all three now ;D
