Chamber Dimensions????
« on: August 20, 2008, 05:47:33 AM »
I am trying to find out the chamber and throat dimensions on a Model 94AE .356.  I also would like to have the .358 chamber and throat dimensions.  I would gladly pay for a book that has these type of things if there is one.  I haven't had much luck as yet.
Please advise if you can.

Here's a handy online source of a lot of chamber and cartridge dimensions, no 356 or 358 Win tho.

quickdtoo,

I looked thru Leverguns and noticed there wasn't any .356 and .356.  There is a website somewhere that has all of the cartridges and chambers but I lost it when I crashed had it in my favorites and never could find it again.  I will keep looking until I find it and when I do I will post the website here.

The cartridge dimensions are here:

And, From Clymer (reamers):

"Length clearances are also dictated by cartridge preparation and care. Because of brass flow, we would not recommend a chamber neck length less than .010" longer than actual cartridge. Overall chamber length to the end of the case mouth would be a minimum of .010" longer than the actual case dimension."

"Chamber neck sections that pinch the neck of the cartridge by being too short and/or too tight, extremely short throats and excessive headspace can all create high chamber pressures.
Unless you are planning to ream/turn case necks, we would not recommend the neck section of your chamber be made less than .004" larger than actual cartridge diameter."

Ammoguide has more detailed cartridge dimensions using SAAMI specs, Steve's pages gives very contradictory info on a lot of the cartridges listed, and blocks links to individual drawings. Unfortunately Ammoguide is by subscription only now, but worth it IMO, it also has a lot of other useful info.

Ranchdog has some precision drawings on his site, go to   http://ranchdogmolds.com/   and then click on the appropriate bullet diameter mould # on the left side, then Chamber Drawings on the right side.

fknifper:  fire a 356 round and mic the fired case - that will tell you the size of your chamber then go to Steve's Pages or to the other links to determine what a 358 case dimensions are.

I do not believe you should have more than .001 to .002 larger chamber than case dimension with a throat no longer than .001 longer than the case.  Some mil-spec go larger by .001 or so but custom barrel makers I have spoken with tell me they do not go more than .001 over spec for hunting chambers.  HTH.  Mikey.

The same dies are used to reload both 356 and 358 cartridges.  Can't be much if any chamber difference other than the rim.

Don't know about the throats.

thanks guys for all the information.  Figured out the .356 but not the .358.  Throat dimensions have to be different because the OAL length of a .356 is 2.550 and the .358 is 2.800.
