help with blackhorn 209 powder
« on: August 21, 2008, 05:53:31 PM »
I'm having trouble with misfires when using the new blackhorn powder.  I decided to try the new blackhorn powder in my 52. cal disc xt (standard domed breech plug, win 209 primer) but can't get it to ignite properly.  I have been shooting 777 and it goes off everytime.  I tried cleaning the breech plug (it did have some carbon buildup), but it did not seem to help.  The only way I can get it to work is to take the breech plug out after every shot and clean out the flash hole.  I thought I might have some bad primers, but I had the same problem with a brand new sleeve.  I also read that the power stem breech does not work well with the new powder so I have not tried it.

I also just purchased a 50 cal. disc xt on clearance.  any suggestions on bullets?  I have a box of 290 gr barnes tmz that I was going to start with to see how they shoot.  I have also been wondering how the powerstem breech from my 52 will work in the 50
thanks

Well, it would seem to me that the blackhorn is a bit hard to ignite.  The only thing I can think of is to flush your barrel and breech plug with alcohol to clear out any remnants of oil from cleaning and storage.  If the problem is bad at the range, it's going to be much worse when your powder sits in the barrel for days on end during the hunting season under changing weather conditions.

You could try a booster charge of 777 or real black, but then that would defeat the purpose (less cleaning) of using the $40 per 10 oz blackhorn in the first place.... might as well just use straight 777 or real black and save some money if it comes to that.  Hopefully someone has some useful knowledge for you.... I'm more of a flint and goex type of guy myself.

The powerstem will likely not work at all.  You need the Knight plugs that have the dished in face (rather than the domed) to get reliable ignition.  I believe the standard FPJ plug has such a face.   Most are having ok results with the non-fpj conversion and BH209 - you can find at that at Midsouth.

Kev is exactly right - the BH209 is very picky about ignition.  I don't know if it has been tested by Western Powder in very cold weather, but it might go from picky to nearly impossible when the thermometer drops.
WHUT?

Use 209A primers and it will work ever time.

OK

The problem is the domed plug.  And here's how to fix it:

find the drill bit that just fits the inside of the nipple.  Then drill out the plug Exactly 5cm--that is measured from the face of the nipple.  This will end just at the beginning of the bare--non-threaded portion of the neck.

Now you will have a plug that still resists blow back, and will ignite BH209 Every Time. ;)

I know, cause that's how I got mine to work flawlessly :) ;)

And use Only NEW red plastic jackets, and this will decrease blowback even more ;D :)

thanks for the info.  I also ran across the other board talking about bh209.  I'm looking forward to gettin back on the range if this rain will ever let up.  I've got a trip to Kansas coming up quick so I've got to get things dialed in.

Here is my experience with BH 209. Burned up just about a jug of the stuff in my Knight original DISC at the range using the Remington STS primer. I would get around 6-10 shots before I would get swoosh fires. Confident that I would be ok for the first few shots until the breech plug got cruded up I decided to hunt with the stuff this season. Temp 23 degrees hunt weekend: Day 1 no deer. Day 2 same load from day before - doe 30 yards Swoosh!!!!!! instead of bang. Been told should of used CCI mag or Federal 209A. Tell you what, go ahead and use the stuff, I'm finished. Just should not be that picky. Should make you think twice when you have to google and read expereince threads to figure how to make the stuff work.

i'm on my 6th jug of blackhorn and have shot quite a bit of it out of 3 knights with origanal disc, red fpj discs and the nfpj setup from knight's website.all of these will ignite blackhorn well down to at least 15*this is as cold as i have tested so far.this is what has worked for me.first get a 1/8" drill bit to make sure your breech plugs flash channel is open, just turn this in by hand so you won't remove metal.2nd have a tight fitting sabot/ bullet.when you seat sabot over the load lean on the ramrod with alot of pressure, you don't have to slam it on the powder just really lean on it after it's on top of the load.when your cleaning afterward you'll know what the drillbits for.a very hard carbon buildup in the flash channel of the BP.hope this helps.......karl
PS-while i've done ok with win.209's in cold weather i use federal 209a primers(they are the hottest or so i've been told)

I agree with k.  Tight sabot and well compressed load.  Old style, concave, FPJ  breach plug with a Federal 209A primer.  Works perfect every time in my Disk Extreme.

I've never had a problem with build up in the breach plug.  Never swab between shots.  I've fired over 30 rounds in a session then put the gun up dirty then gone back the next day and shot some more.

I have had hangfires with the Winchester and Remington STS primers.  Haven't tried the CCI mag primers yet.

This is just a suggestion. I take 28 gauge shotgun wads and cut the petals off. I then seat them above the powder and then the sabot with a bullets, and as previously said 209-a Federal pimers. I have never had a misfire. The wad seem to seal better where the sabot may not seat completly causing misfires. And I really feel there is abetter ignition making for better acccuracy. Lou
