Weatherby 399

Well, in looking at GBO's ads, I saw that Weatherby has a new "Weatherby 399."  I started asking myself.......what?

It turns out that it's actually Weatherby's Vanguard line that starts at $399 for their synthetic/matte models.  Well, I've got to admit, even though it's a Vanguard - which is essentially a Howa action, $399 for such a gun is still a very low price and sure to attract buyers.  What do you guys think?

At that price Weatherby can compete with your low buck rifles such as the Savage package rifles , Mossbergs  new bolt action , Stevens and so on..
 I own several Weatherby's and love'em as well as one Howa in .223 with a bull barrel.
Should be a good buy for the money and at todays prices its as steal.

I bought a NIB Weatherby Mark 5 synthetic in 30-06 Springfield for only $550.00, so the deals are out there, just need to look and have patients.

I wanted a 30-06 Springfield in a real Weatherby action.

Good price for what it is, but I don't buy synthetic stocked rifles.  All the newer rifles (ATR-100, Stevens 200, Marlin XL-7, and now the Weatherby) are disappointing me as none of the budget models come with wood - even cheapo wood - anymore.  Guess it's just a shift in public preferences.  I'll just stick to buying older used ones - I might would restock with wood depending on what they had available.

You know, it seems "a great deal" for a weatherby... but if you look at it, it is still a bargain rifle.  Cheaply made for being inexpensive.  Now I am not taking anything away from its performance, but to hold it up to the standards of the mark V and such is rediculous.  From the vanguards I have looked over, I don't see a whole lot to be gained on it over the other package rifles from stevens/mossberg/remington/etc.

We had one store with ads in last Sundays paper for the vanguard in 5 calibers at $399 with 3 shot groups no more than 1 1/2" at 100yds.  With everyone watch the dollar I think it's a good deal.

The 770's and 200's shoot under that also.  For much less money.

I own 2. A synthetic stocked model in .300 Weatherby Magnum, and a beautifully stocked Walnut model in .30-06. Both are topped with Leupold's and are very accurate. I can shoot as good, or better groups than the test targets that came with both rifles.  Bill T.

You can get a Remington 700 for less after the factory rebate.  My friend has a new Howa and It's very cheaply made.

I have a Howa 1500 laminated stock 270 that is a shooter and very good quality,no slop in the bolt and has a good trigger ,i think they are a sleeper in the rifle world but that is just my opinion.

Wrong. Weatherby Vanguard with nicely figured Walnut with cut checkering, and contrasting Rosewood forend tip. $425.00. Shoots under an inch as long as you want to sit and pull the trigger.   Bill T.

Where'd you find that one?  Most stores that I've been seeing the wood-stocked Vanguards for want $525+.  And unfortunately for me, Howa only makes the 6.5x55 under their own name.  Weatherby doesn't seem to be interested in rebranding that one .

I bought it at Wal-Mart of all places. Lately some Wal-Marts have been doing screwy things with guns in some of there stores. The one by be stopped selling firearms, then started again. I've seen this at other Wal-Marts as well. It's like they can't make up their minds. That, or else when management changes, so does their stance on firearm sales. Anyway, I bought this one when they were closing out their inventory a couple of years back. I've seen them in other Wal-Marts as well for slightly more, ($450.00).  Bill T.

i couldn't possibly disagree with you more.    the vanguard is not cheaply made.  although i didn't care for the howa with their synthetic stock on it.   the vanguard stock is somewhat heavy; but it's a great stock in my opinion.

my vanguard synthetic is a shooter.   as far as the mark V, aren't they now coming in those hotrod weatherby calibers with button-rifled barrels?    ''you can have all of mine'' if they're button rifled in any hotrod caliber.

i'll take a model 700 or a model 77 mkII or hawkeye over anything else out there.   but that's because they're fully american made and hammer forged the last i knew.   but the vanguard is the real sleeper.   i'm one of 'em who knows.
