Yes, it's cheap enough that mamma let me have it for my birthday.  She did whine just a little.  I have several thousand 38 Special cases, and the S&W Model 15 Combat Masterpiece that belonged to my dad to go with it.  I think it will be good for woods bummin'.

Let us know how it shoots. I will probably purchase one sometime next year for my grandson, if he improves on his school grades....

I have one of the older models, Right after I got it I reamed to a Maxmum.
Great  cal. Shoots 38/357 better after reaming.
Best of luck with your new toy.

You'll love it. I couldn't be happier with mine. I can shoot 2" groups @ 70 yards with the factory open sights using the cheap Remington 125 Gr. JSP from wally world. It shoots 148 Gr. .38 Special Wadcutters even better, I've gotten 1 1/4" groups with those using the factory irons.

Mine did have a bit of a breaking in period. It didn't shoot .357's well until I had about 150 rounds through it. It did shoot .38's well right out of the box, though.

I ordered a Leupold Rifleman 2x7x33 for mine through wally world but it's on backorder until October. I'll do a range report when it comes in and I get it mounted. I'll be using it to hunt the thick New Hampshire woods this fall.

Mark me happy with mine as well... I got mine as an accessory barrel, and it has been a lot of fun.

It shoots better than my Marlin 1894CS ever did, and cost much less to boot.  ;D

Those of you that replied, how loud is the .38 special ammo such as the 158 American Eagle or a cowboy load out of this gun?

I've been watching  Bud's for a while now, but all they seem to have were the SB1 Handi's. I was hoping to get myself an SB2 to get a 35 Rem made. -g

I already have an SB2 receiver, & I feel the barrel program is more trouble than it's worth.  That's why I wasn't concerned about it being an SB1.  Gunbroker has some SB2s.  To tell the truth, I think the .35 Remington is more trouble than it's worth in a Handi.  The .357 Max works better and has about all the power most folks need.

I"ve shot a couple of boxes of American Eagle 158 gr. .38s and .357s out of both my Handi and Blackhawk and I didn't feel ;they were very loud at all, but I shoot a lot of "06s and .45-70s.  It's sort of comparing a mouse squeak to a lions roar.

Your're going to love that combination, my Handi and Blackhawk are good buddies and constant companions.

.38's are very quiet out of these guns. 148 grain wadcutters aren't much louder than a .22
They are so quiet that even my very recoil shy 10 year old daughter doesn't mind shooting them.

As said, you're gonna love it.  Mine goes out on almost ever range trip as well as anyother time I take a rifle.  Got 2 levers in 357 and also have 2 frames in to get 357 barrels fitted.  They were on the "table" last I checked, need to give em another week :'( and check again.  After reading as much as I have about the Max, gonna have to do that and looking serious at 35 Rem or 358 (356) Win. as well.  DP

That gun is gonna be a real hoot to shoot.  Wish they still made it with iron sights I would buy one myself.

I found an Ultra stock on ebay.  An option would be to have a front sight added, and install the rear peep that uses the scope base holes.

The 357mag accessory barrel still comes with sights as does the SB2 rifle version when you can find them. Even if it didn't H&R used to add sights to any rifle barrel that don't come with them for $47, I suspect it will be more now.

I don't use sights anymore, so the scope rail will be fine for me.

It came today, and it's a great looking little gun.  I was hoping my 20 gauge youth barrel would fit it, but it was a little too loose.  The Monte Carlo synthetic stock is the nicest I've ever seen, but I have an Ultra laminated/checkered stock that I'm probably going to use.  The barrel is marked SB2 but the receiver is marked .357 Mag .44 Mag and shotgun barrels only.  It does have the small dia. firing pin.  I have a Simmons 3-9X40 and a Simmons 3-9X32.  I will use one or the other.

I wouldn't be too afraid to use other low pressure barrels on this receiver, but that's just me.

Bud's came through for me, and I'm very pleased.

My 20 gauge youth receiver is at NEF getting a .45-70 barrel fitted right now.

I too am thinking of getting a handi in .357 mag, figure it would be a good small game rifle or even for whitetail at close range. Up here in Canada I can't use my .357 revolver for hunting so this would be the next best thing.(Or maybe better) ;D

Huh?  I thought they wouldn't fit rifle barrels to shotgun frames?

They won't fit rifle barrels to any SB1 frame with the exception of the 357Mag and 44mags that are factory built rifles on SB1 frames, they can't be fitted with any other rifle barrels, just shotgun barrels.

It is actually from a Youth Combo which had a SB2 frame because of the .243 barrel that came with the combo package.

IMO the new .357 Magnum SB1 Handi is not safe to convert to .357 Max.
