Not really. The Model Seven is a bit shorter than the M700 short action but only by a very small bit something like perhaps a quarter inch.

So you are saying that the 2 actions are pretty much the same then huh? That is interesting. I knew you could swap barrels between the 2 actions. I now am wondering if stocks could be swaped as well. I would think not though.Dale

I always wondered what remington thought the point of the model 7 was ? I do like remington my first rifle was a 700 bdl .243, my second was a mountian rifle in .270.  They can make idenical configurations with both rifles.

Can't switch stocks, as the Model 7 is shorter.  Also, the I don't think that the Model 7 has the guide rail slot in the bolt head (don't have one to look at right now), and the extractor on the Model 7 (as originally designed) is bigger for some reason.  Again, I don't have one currently to see if it's still that way.

I think that the point was to have the most compact full strength action available.

Rem took the X-P action and made the model 7,  afew years before they quit making the X-P they made them with a magazine called R model and they had the regular Rem Bolt handle and they were also chamber in 7-08 and 308.  The Model 7,X-P and Rem 660 are the same length actions and the model 7 replaced the old Rem 660 bolt action rifle.

If you take the model 7 and the model 700 and put them side by side, you will notice that the ejection port is smaller on the 7 and the bolt is longer than the 700. It seemed odd to me that the bolt is longer on the model 7 than the 700, but we checked several and they are. The throw for both seem the same to me. I have never seen the benifit of the model 7 other than the shorter barrel and lighter weight. ;)

I suggest you switch those bolts and put them back into the proper rifles. I just checked mine and sorry but the short action M700 bolt is close to 1/4" LONGER not shorter than the Model Seven bolts. At my house there are a LOT of M700s and M7s and the Seven is shorter in all respects.

I guess what i was thinking is Remington could have just put whatever length bbl and stock on the mdl 700 to accomplish the same thing or completely switch over to the mdl seven for their short actions not that theirs anything wrong with having both.
