Youth Switch?
« on: August 25, 2008, 05:50:26 AM »
I just bought a 308 barrel for my 223.
Got to thinking this will be a great setup for my son when he is big enough.
Get a couple of matching scopes. Practice with the 223 and then swicth to the 308 for deer hunting.
Both would be sighted in the same.

Anybody tried this?

Haven't tried it yet, but that is exactly what I was thinking.  I'm going to pick up a 308 Ultra and when they get up and running in NY I'll send it in to get a .223 barrel fitted.

I have already picked up the scopes and an extra set of laminates.  He is turning 1 next week so I have a little time to work on it.

Mine is 2 now. It'll be here before we know it.

Hi guys:

Works for granddads to do this as well.  Bought a 17HMR and sent it in to have 22WMR and 22LR barrels fitted.  Bought scopes for all three barrels that match and have everything set up.  Oldest grandson is six now and enjoys shooting.

Having done this I now wish I had simply bought three rifles rather than having to swap barrels around all the time.  I'm going to buy a set of three for the other grandson when he gets a bit older.  May sell off a couple of these barrels I have and get complete rifles.

Just a lot easier to let the little guy shoot different rifles without the barrel swapping.

My grandson is 13, and he's doing his first deer hunt during Michigan's Youth Hunt, the 27th and 28th of September.  He'll be using my new Handi 7mm-08.  He's shot it quite a few times and is accurate and comfortable with it.  What he doesn't know is that it will be his at Christmas.  I think it is a good caliber for a kid, (he's big) and will take larger game than the .243 and the other .24, 6mm  calibers.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

I started with a youth model 7mm-08 for my daughter, then had a .223 barrel fitted when I sent it back to the factory because of other problems.  The scoped .223 barrel doesn't shoot much better than my AR with irons.

It's a good concept and I still think H&R should offer a two barrel youth model set; .223 and your choice of .260, 7mm-08 or .308.   ;D
Cordially,
