.358 Bullet seating die
« on: August 25, 2008, 07:42:22 AM »
I started working on a load for my .358 Win using Rem 200 gr. PSPCL's.  This is a spire point bullet like another bullet makers offering.  I have a set of Redding 357/358 dies.  When I was adjusting the seating die to get the desired OAL I ran out of downward adjustment with the seating stem!   :o

The seating die was screwed into the press then backed out one full turn.  When I ran out of adjustment with the seating stem I tried screwing the die in but started getting a crimp before I could get the bullet far enough into the case.

The stem is the same as the one on my 35 Whelen die and I had no problem seating that bullet in 35 W brass, but they were seated out longer.

I ended up using the seating stem out of my 300 WM die set to get the bullets seated to the desired depth.

I have never had this happen before.  My .358 seems to have a very short throat and I was seating the bullets to a shorter then usual OAL, both with and without a comparator, but not that short!  The cannelure was above the mouth of the case.  However the cases were a little short to begin with, being reformed .308 brass.  Any ideas what's going on here?   ???  It must be me, but I can't for the life of me see what I'm missing.

Thank heaven only 16 people have read this thread...
I'm pretty sure I figured out what I did, or more correctly, did wrong.  I really hate to say it; I'm embarrased and can't believe I was so dumb/careless/inattentive/whatever.  :-[  But, FWIW, I believe that when I screwed in the seating die I just ran the ram up and screwed the die down utill it touched the shell holder!   :o  Not once, but several times trying to get the die adjusted!   ::)

Maybe I'm getting to senile to reload anymore... or maybe I'll have to quit drinkin' when I'm reloading...  :-\

definetly lose the likker! This could cause more than a seating problem. As being too old,MY grand dad cast and loaded till he was in his 90's!

Glad you figured it out buddy , it too had me baffled ,  ??? kinda strange how the simplest things sneak past us as we get more compulsive with this hobby and forget the basic steps .  :o

If it helps any I looked at this thread 4 times to see if I was missing something too . ::)
