New scope for my 45-70

I bought a 45-70 last year and planned to use the open sights to keep it light and compact.  Today while window shopping at a local outfitter I spotted a Burris compact 4X20 and tried it out.  But wanting to keep things compact, told the guy I would only take it if it would work with some Zee low rings.  We took everything out of the package, and I'll have to take off about 1/8" from the hammer to make it work.  I was very surprised at how clear and bright it was for it's size.  I normally would not spend $200 on a scope, but this one called my name.  I'll post some pics once I get it trimmed and mounted up.

The 4x fixed scope is a great idea, I have a couple Superlight 243s with 4x32 Weaver shotgun scopes on them, they're very compact and light, one of em is even mounted in Burris extra low rings(discontinued) with a modified hammer, great minds think alike!!

Burris's line of compact rifle scopes are well made quality products. They offer clear quality optics with generous eye relief. About the only bad you hear about them is they are a tad overweight. But then again, so am I. 

  I have this exact scope on my .50 cal BP Sidekick Handi!!  You will LOVE IT!!!

I trimmed the hammer and modified the hammer extension and got a solid 1/16" clearance.    However, one thing I noticed is that the crosshairs are difficult to focus now that I have had a chance to play with it.  Is that a function of the focus ring?  I have never encountered this before.  The sight picture appears clear, but the crosshairs appear fuzzy.  If I fool my eyes a bit I can get them to focus, but never at the same time as the field view?

That needs to be done on every scope before using it the first time.

Thanks Quick.  After some googling I determined that I have been lucky in getting scopes out of the box that worked great for my eyes.  I'll adjust my new baby when I get home.

Also, I removed the open sights mostly because I didn't want them to snag on anything in the woods.  Any suggestions for plugging the empty threaded holes?

Get some plug screws from a gunsmith or other source, H&R has sent them to us before they moved to Ilion, dunno it that's possible now, but you could call and ask toll free (866)776-9292. The rear screws are 6-48, the front will be 6-48 or 3-48.

Don't the scope base mounting hole filler screws, fit where the sight's empty threaded holes were?

I moved the ocular all the way forward and everything was bright and the reticle was perfectly in focus.  I hope to go throw some huge chunks of lead tomorrow afternoon. 

Has anyone ever taken note of the difference in POI between Leverevoloutions and and Remington 405s?  I plan to sight in and hunt with the Hornady's but was wondering how much my scope would be off at 100 yds with the 405s.
